Enjoyable, if a tad stilted.

Will Any Gentlemen...? is adapted from the stage play by Vernon Sylvanie. Where the play was apparently joyous in its farcical ideals, this adaptation struggles to convince as a farcical whole. The plot revolves around George Cole's spineless bank clerk, Henry Sterling, who whilst attending a music hall show, falls under Mendoza the hypnotist's spell (Alan Badel looking like Satan!). This brings about a complete character change in Henry, he is now a womanizer and shifty in the extreme, this of course causes much consternation to Henry's wife, who enlists Mendoza to track down Henry and snap him out of this dubious spell.

Some solid laughs come about as the farce rate ups during the final third, but some of the dialogue is terribly twee and the cast in the main struggle to deliver fun lines with any great conviction, with Jon Pertwee as Charley Sterling particularly looking out of place. However, the picture is not a total waste of time, it has a certain charming appeal and at the least it does put a smile on ones face from time to time. Ultimately, though, a better cast and a stronger director could have made this into a British treasure. 5/10

no myth of the west, but also no High Noon

Who saw Alfred Werker 's two remarkable westerns "The Last Posse" and Three Hours to Kill" will not be deceived by "At Gunpoint", which basically has the same story as High Noon, but in a totally different style. And the difference in style is huge; High Noon used the myth of the west, from the cinematography to the hero and the ballad, everything was keyed to what we would expect in a standard western, but this time done better. Werker, on the opposite, uses a realistic style, his hero is a shopkeeper who just wants to live a decent life. He is no Wiil Kane. By showing typical town people, their fears, and their decisions when faced by a crisis, Werker manages to make a good western, without the clichés of the fifties. But he throws down the drain the beauty of the myth of the West. We can adapt John Ford's theory and say "When the legend is bigger than the truth, film the legend" and wonder if Werker would have followed he would not have improved the film. But he also might have ruined it.. You will enjoy At Gunpoint as long as you don't compare it to High Noon.

Hello, Not avail or video or DVD, Ain't Misbehavin is a movie gem from the 1950's. A movie practically nobody has seen! Background: I had the movie poster for this film for over 10 years hanging in my den! But I could never see it because it was never available anywhere!!! I loved the poster- It's got Mamie Van Doren, Rory Calhoun, Piper Laurie, The slogan went It's got that mamama Mamie and its got that mamama Mambo! Ma Ma Ma I was hooked!! It was on the top of my movies to see list for years! Finally Last year a copy of the movie made from a Canada TV airing or something was put on Ebay and I got to see it!!! Its great, the musical numbers are great, Mamie Van Doren is great, Piper Laurie is great. It's the best movie ever made!! Run out and find a copy and see it!

In spite of the more-than-pedestrian B-title, this minor-A western from Universal is more of a character study of three people than it is a run-of-the-mill western. It has only a couple of gunshots and no killings and no blood-letting, and is ideally suited for the laconic, take-it-easy and laid-back nature of the always-great Joel McCrea as Del "Rock" Rockwell. Here, he is a man wise to the nature of women and horses, attemptiing to establish a homestead with the aid of his adopted-son Til (Race Gentry). They join neighboring rancher Alida Spain (Mari Blanchard) in her quest to capture a wild black stallion (Outlaw). Rockwell taunts her while the 20-year-old Til falls in love with her and she, of course, is falling in love with Rockwell. Neighboring rancher Jennings (Murvyn Vye) brings some conflict to the proceedings but nothing that Rockwell can't handle without the use of guns.

Just another great Joel McCrea western!

Excellent western in Technicolor! It's about a wild black stallion that Mari Blanchard wants for stock rearing purposes. Joel McCrea and Race Gentry as her neighbors set about to help her capture the horse. Another neighbor, Murvyn Vye,also wants the horse for his own purposes. As things proceed, both McCrea & Gentry fall in love with Blanchard. There are no shootouts only some fighting. The scenery is incredible. I've always liked McCrea--especially in the westerns that he did. He was an excellent horseman in real life. Another interesting aspect of this film was the close relationship between McCre and Gentry. McCrea had raised Gentry after the death of his parents &they have a very close and neat relationship.

An unforgettable masterpiece

This is storytelling at its simplest and most beautiful. An old man - his sole companion, a dog - tries to survive on a fixed, tight income while being mistreated by his landlady.

DeSica brilliantly captures the despair of his protagonist and makes this film unforgettably powerful. This film deserves to be seen by everyone, not just those who enjoy foreign-language films.

This film is touching, memorable and manages to draw us into Umberto's life without ever becoming maudlin. The denouement is heartbreaking, but the film never lapses into sentimentality. "Umberto D" truly is one of the greatest films ever made.

Excellent noir B film about strong-willed girl's struggle with crime

Cleo Moore plays a remarkably strong-willed young woman who is an orphan kept as a work-slave in a waterfront café by the man who stole all her father's money. She is too glamorous for her own good, and no one stops ogling her for a minute, despite the fact that she has no time for that kind of thing. One night she accidentally sees the horrid old man receiving a large sum of cash in his office from a crook, to whom he has passed some stolen goods. She waits until he is asleep and creeps in and steals the money and takes it outside and buries it in a secret place where no one could possibly find it. She then confesses to the police the next morning that she is the thief, and is sent to prison, where she learns gardening and is told by the old gardener of the power which plant roots have to shift things underground and break through walls (this is important later in the story). She is let out after three years for her excellent behaviour and then makes her way back to the café, but it has been demolished and the old man has absconded to South America, so she cannot take revenge. She gets a job in another café owned by a compulsive gambler, to wait things out until she can be certain the various local crooks aren't following her when she goes to dig up the loot. He loses all his money and she wants to help him out with her stolen money. She also falls for a handsome young fisherman. Things get complicated and then more complicated. She sends someone out to dig up the dough but it isn't where she buried it. Then he suddenly comes into money and she thinks he has tricked her, so she goes to see him to protest and he ends up slightly dead, or is he? The film is very good viewing, and Cleo Moore is something all right.

Love triangle, jealousy and Aztecs

More a postcard of Mexico than a movie, despite which, actor William Lundigan stars as a straight-laced archaeologist who reluctantly takes stand-in photographer (Castle) along on an expedition where tensions grow as a love triangle evolves with local guide (Silvestre).

Interesting cast features the young Rosenda Monteros as Silvestre's scorned woman, the ill-fated Peggie Castle as the seductive snapper, and Latin heart-throb Silvestre as the bane of Lundigan's dapper but ultimately bland existence. The soap opera treatment services the romantic melodrama and sexual tension, leaving the action to compete for the sloppy seconds. At times, Lundigan looks like coitus interruptus personified, such are the provocative glances and horny exchanges between Castle and her Latin tease.

Despite colourful landscapes and an attractive cast, the film never elevates beyond B-grade fodder, incapable of conjuring any excitement or palpable tension, weighed down by inane dialogue ("merely a vampire bat") and a plot that prefers melodrama to action (60 minutes passes before the first glimpse of something more fervent than tent buddies on heat). The climax and conclusion offer some redemption, with a fiery Aztec encounter, but it's all too little too late to resurrect the picture from 'average' status.

Another in the long line of the Trials-and-Tribulations (compounded by Misery and Irony) offerings from Hugo Haas. This time out his character, Marko (Hugo Haas, is searching for a lost gold mine with his young partner Ray Brighton ('John Agar' )qv)) and, despite the fact that Haas appears no more at home playing a prospector than Raymond Hatton would playing a Bulgarian diplomat, they find the mine. But Marko decides he doesn't want to share with his partner and figures out a devious and complicated scheme to get rid of him. (Shooting him in the head and burying him in the desert is far too simple a solution in a Haas film.) So, Marko ups and marries buxom young Peggy (Cleo Moore) as a marriage of convenience, even though past experience would indicate any involvement with a character played by Cleo Moore would not be described as anything close to convenience. "The Door's Open - Come on In!"

The movie BAIT is remembered, if for anything, for Cleo Moore's "kissing" incident while on a promo tour for the film. While being interviewed on live television in Chicago, the host quizzed Cleo about movie kisses and the subject somehow got around to how short they usually are. The host (no fool he!!) then suggested to Cleo that they go for a record smooch over live television to which the always publicity savvy La Moore agreed and they enjoyed a fairly chaste smooch that ran for several minutes and made national headlines. Too bad the film Cleo was promoting was not as interesting. BAIT is definitely not one of the better Cleo Moore/Hugo Haas collaborations and undoubtedly quite a few fans of the blonde sex-bomb will not be pleased to see she spends quite a bit of the film with her hair up and wearing jeans and a non-tucked in flannel shirt, not exactly pinup glamour. The movie does have it's moments though, notably the intriguing introduction by Sir Cedric Hardwicke.

Cleo stars as a cashier in a little dump of a mom-and-pop store, despised because she is an apparently unwed mother. Nasty old gold prospector Hugo Haas looks on her as trash but his partner John Agar is clearly attracted to the luckless blonde. When the men actually discover gold, greedy Haas tries to think of a way to have it all for himself and decides to marry Cleo, certain that in their secluded corner of the world Agar won't be able to resist Cleo's sex appeal, thus allowing Haas to shoot and kill him and get away with it via "the unwritten law".

The best thing about the film is the natural chemistry between Cleo Moore and John Agar. Hugo Haas makes a much better villain than sympathetic leading man so he's well cast and gives a good performance although his direction is generally uninspired. This one used to play on late shows in the 1980's fairly often but is somewhat elusive in recent years, hopefully Sony will be releasing it in their custom line of "made to order" titles following their recent success of the boxed set of "bad girls" mostly starring Cleo Moore.

Mob Violence

Federal Marshal Dan Duryea arrives in the town of Silver Lode with three deputies to arrest one of its citizens, John Payne, on a charge of murder. As things start to happen, Payne who at first has the whole town behind him, loses all his friends save for fiancé Lizabeth Scott and former girl friend Dolores Moran who works in the saloon. By the way, Duryea arrives on the 4th of July which was also to be Payne's wedding day.

This is a classic version of the ill effects of mob violence. Some have said it's a polemic against McCarthyism, no doubt helped by the fact that Duryea's character name is McCarty. For myself Silver Lode is in the tradition of The Oxbow Incident and Fury, both classic films from major studios about vigilante justice.

Silver Lode doesn't have the production values that 20th Century Fox or MGM could bring to a movie, it was done by RKO. Nevertheless supporting Payne, Duryea, and Scott are a solid cast of players, very much at home in westerns. This was also Dolores Moran's last film, she was married to producer Benedict Bogeaus.

Payne had already essayed a very good role in Kansas City Confidential of a wrongly accused man and he follows it up here with an equally good portrayal. It's one of his best film parts.

Allan Dwan keeps things moving at a brisk pace, Silver Lode doesn't bog down for a fraction of a second. One of the best B westerns ever done.

Aunt Bea Does London

This is a remake of the 1944 "The Lodger", which was a remake of the early Hitchock silent "The Lodger". This one isn't bad but uses most of the dialogue from the 1944 version. Jack Palance gives an excellent portrayal of the lodger who may or may not be Jack the Ripper. Palance has a certain menace here but yet you feel some sympathy for him. That voice should be trademarked!! Constance Smith plays the part of his object of affection/hatred and there is a good performance from Rhys Williams, a long time character actor, as her uncle. It's a little tough getting by Frances Bavier as Smith's aunt since to most TV viewers she will forever be Aunt Bea from Mayberry. Frankly, she can't hold a candle to Sara Allgood in the 1944 version but she passes muster. I found the 1944 version superior to this film due to the presence of Laird Cregar and George Saunders but this remake is worth watching, especially if you are a Jack Palance fan.

lovely take on my hometown

I love these German movies of the 50's. Especially this one because it was shot in my hometown, exteriors and the lavish sound stages too. Sadly all the studios have been closed down a long time ago. But hey I pass the wonderful balcony of Tereses' almost every day. Back to topic: a nice, even risqué story, Romy Schneider in her first role (stealing every scene from her mother who was a really bad actress). What made me laugh were the Busby Berkeley-like stages where Bill Perry performed contrasted to about 10 rows of enthusiastic extras who looked like sitting in a small schoolhouse audience. And the beauty of the costumes and of Hertha Feiler. Sigh. Wiesbaden was a contender to be the capital of German film-making. Sadly these days are gone.

The Story Of Dizzy Dean

It seems that 10 years later, someone decided to try to recapture what made "Pride of the Yankees" (the story of New York Yankee great Lou Gehrig) work so well, and so they decided to put out "The Pride of St. Louis" (the story of St. Louis Cardinal great Dizzy Dean.) Frankly, it didn't work as well.

It's an OK movie, but compared to "Pride of the Yankees" it's lacking. Some might argue that the comparison is unfair, but the similarity in name suggests that the comparison was on the minds of those who produced this movie. But this lacks the power of the previous movie. It lacks the star power (Dan Dailey, who played Dean, is certainly no Gary Cooper, who played Gehrig.) It also lacks the story power. Gehrig's story was just more dramatic and powerful. Gehrig died - Dean's arm went on him. I felt for him - and there was a pretty good depiction of the troubles Dean had accepting the end of his career - but I can't say that I was drawn into his story as I was into Gehrig's.

One of the most entertaining westerns ever !

I have found this movie to be one of the most entertaining westerns I have ever seen. It is funny even when it is not trying to be. An all star cast, last of the B westerns and it is, in a way, a parody of High Noon with the clocks and Tex singing about sorry starry midnight. The poker game is brilliant ! Every western theme is here except for a mining scene. Talk about flash-backs. Try to figure where you are at any time during the movie. The dance scene with Laurie and Frenchie is something I have never seen before or since. The theme song by Tex would be considered politically incorrect now days. The dual identity of Laurie is over the top. How could one not like this jewel ?

O'Rourke and his Cree half brother Cajou are returning from a northern Canadian trapping trip when they encoutner a burned wagon train and sole surivor Grace. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse vacationed in Banff. There are snow capped mountains surrounding Fort Walsh in SW Saskatchewan. The Mounties had a gun battle with the Sioux, leaving many dead on both sides. You can travel by canoe from the Rockies to Fort Walsh in a day (quite a feat considering it's hundreds of miles, and there's no river).

It's all good.

Indian scouts making jungle calls to each other at night. Mighty Alan Ladd slaying men left and right, winning the heart of the beautiful woman, and never having to raise his voice or change it from a flat, dull monotone. That's the kind of men the Mounties were made of.

Best of all, Shelley Winters in a low cut dress, six gun in hand explaining "I was on my way to Battleford!"

Review :

A fine swan song for Pa

If you actually take the time to read the trivia sections for these films, you will know that this is the last of the series filmed with Percy Kilbride. Ma and Pa Kettle at Waikiki was shot three years earlier, but it's release was held until after this one. This is a wonderful send off for Pa and I wish Universal had been wise enough to quit while they were ahead, but that's another story all together.

This is one of two personal favorites of the series, the other being Ma and Pa Kettle at the Fair. The things they both have in common are the look at small town life and a better sense of humor than the first two pictures. There are a couple of early pratfalls with Ma that don't work, but the rest of the film is a nice mix of sincerity and hilarity. Geoduck, Crowbar and the rest of the men in their tribe steal the show when they try to help Pa out of the jam he has created. It's nice every once in a while to slow down, relax and watch a Ma and Pa Kettle film. It's one of the not-so-guilty pleasures of life.
