Absolutely wonderful film
"Lili", based on Paul Gallico's "Love For Seven Dolls", is one of the most delightful films ever. Leslie Caron deserved her Academy Award nomination as "Lili". The ballet sequence at the end of the film in which each puppet turn into Paul, the puppeteer, making Lili realize she loves him is magical. "Lili" was the basis for a big, lavish Broadway musical "Carnival" that lost the basic beautiful simplicity of the original. This film is a classic and deserves to be. The puppets are magnificent.

One more POW film, and rare too.
British film movie industry had a speciality, during the fifties and also a bit in the sixties, that was war films, especially POW features. Films about escapes from POW camps. Americans made the two GREAT ESCAPE and STALAG 17. But the British made more than that. I saw many POW movies from UK. I don't remember them all, except A TOWN LIKE ALICE and KING RAT. But, I repeat, there were many many more. Do not forget that the British soldiers, during WW2, were, for most of them, prisoners by the Nazis. So...
I won't add much to the previous comment, except that the terrific Anton Diffring character is named Schlutz. That sounds familiar to me. Maybe I am wrong, but I think of the famous TV show STALAG 13 - aka PAPA SHULTZ in french title - that spoke about POW guys, in a comedy TV series. The warden of the POW camp also named Schultz. But this character had nothing to do with the evil one played here by the magnificent villain Diffring.
The whole production team can be proud of its work as "Morsiusseppele" comes out to be very colorful piece of romantic melodrama. Specially Hannu Leminen proves finally his value as one of classic directors in Suomi Filmi.
The script is very thin and blight but the director has pulled the very best out of the intensive scenes and the actors are also at their greatest top.
Some takes in the middle of the movie capture the fading summer so beautifully that the mind can't help flying straight to the open fields and silent lakes.
In mediaeval Japan a compassionate governor is sent into exile. His wife and children try to join him, but are separated, and the children grow up amid suffering and oppression.

One of the Best Films of All Time? Sure.
Many would not even rank "Sansho the Bailiff" among Mizoguchi's better works, let alone cite it as one of the greatest films of all time. I have not seen every film ever made nor every film Mizoguchi ever made but I find it hard to imagine that there are many better films than this or that Mizoguchi made one of them. "Sisters of Gion" comes close, but even that masterpiece cannot match the transcendental glories of "Sansho." It is sheer perfection, utilizing the elements of melodrama that Mizoguchi so excelled at (without overdoing it as he sometimes did) against the backdrop of a haunting, almost mythic landscape. Indeed, the film has the power of myth, even more so than "Ugetsu" (which perhaps tried just a little too hard for that mythic quality) and stands today - almost 50 years after it was made - as a film that is almost shocking in its sublime glories. Mizoguchi was without a doubt one of the giants of cinema and this film is breathtaking.

Excellent version of Mickey Spillane's book.
Mickey Spillane was far better than what people use to give him credit for. His tough guys and sexy, deadly women gave a new life to the private eye novels of the fifties. This is a surprisingly good, forgotten film directed by Victor Saville, who also directed the famous flop "The Silver Chalice". Also a top cinematographer Franz Planer. The story is about Johnny McBride (Anthony Quinn), a man that lost his memory and also his fingerprints. McBride was involved in stealing 250000 dollars from a bank, together with a woman named Vera, who changed her looks and name. There are two remarkable moments in the film, first when the gangster Servo (Gene Evans) has all four women suspected of being Vera together, and then when the beautiful Venus (Peggy Castle) with long blond hair,tied up, drags herself to kiss McBride. Spillane's characters belong to a fantasy pulp, world and there resides their charm.

Simple, corny, yet enjoyable movie.
A quaint, if corny, image of Americana in the near-postwar era. College football star (who will be playing in the Rose Bowl) is in love with poor girl. Jim Backus as poor girl's dad in a role he'll refine for Rebel W/O A Cause. Typical gags such as worn chair with springs sticking out. While the movie is typical of so many B movies (thin, simple plot), I watched this while staying up all night on New Year's Eve and enjoyed it greatly.
Never be sure like i am now to give the vote to a fiction or to a someoneelse, no doubt 10!. Now i will try to persuade the many that haven't still seen this fiction to do it. This is an ironic fiction that talk about the life in two different and opposite way:misery and nobility. The comic verve of Totò, i think the best Italian actor of ever, make this comedy one of the best work of ever. Every time i see it i smile and laugh but i reflect also about the magnificent message that is mixed on the jokes... the worlds can be never enough my opinion should be like an advice to see it. a masterpiece. This film stars Wilfred Pickles who was famous on the radio for his programme "Have A Go".This film about greyhound racing is only of marginal interest.However of more interest are the many familiar faces who pepper the cast list.There is Petula Clarke,still a Rank starlet.Peter Butterworth in this early association with Peter Rogers before the days of the Carry Ons and Jon Pertwee before the days of Wurzel Gummidge.Many of the rest of the cast such as Megs Jenkins and Harold Goodwin are familiar from TV and small parts in films.The best thing that can be said about this film is don't expect too much and you wont be disappointed.

Only if you Like to Count Dead Indians
Often confused with the better Johnny Mack Brown western "Canyon Ambush", "Massacre Canyon" is a standard mid-50's "B" western with a better than average cast.
The cast deserves a better screenplay or at least a screenplay with a more convincing ending. The story has a good basis, a small detail (of soldiers) dress as civilians to get a couple wagon loads of Henry repeating rifles through hostile Indian territory and deliver them to their fort. The rifles are hidden in the wagon beds and the idea is to fool the local Apaches into thinking they are just civilians transporting food. Along the way they are joined by a couple of mail order brides (including film's all-time best bad girl Andrey Totter) and a replacement officer (Phillip Carey) who is being exiled to this remote fort.
This sets up two romances, Totter and Carey pair off as do the remaining bride and one of the soldiers. It also sets up a conflict between Carey and the NCO in charge of the detail (Douglas Kennedy), whose expected promotion will be delayed because of the arrival of a new officer. Finally, it blows their cover because the guy driving the girls discovers the guns and sells the group out to the Indians.
The sets look authentic, the filming is good, the acting is decent, and the story is complex enough to be fairly interesting. But "Massacre Canyon's" claim to fame is the spectacular way the movie crashes and burns during the final 15 minutes, as it features what is undeniably the most moronic Indian attack in cinema history. Not until "Saving Private Ryan" would a director show this much disrespect for the intelligence and basic survival skills of what are supposed to be the "enemy" forces.
The title "Massacre Canyon" apparently refers to the canyon in which at least 60 Apaches attempt to "ambush" Carey and Kennedy (the rest of the cast has left the area) but end up being massacred instead. By now the two have settled their differences and team up to kill the entire war party. Rather than making a strong case for the effectiveness of the Henry rifle, it makes a strong case for the Indians being evolution's missing link. Wave after wave of mounted savages ride up within a few feet of Carey and Kennedy's position, rather than overrun them they stop and begin riding back and forth like targets in a shooting gallery. After most are dropped those who remain ride back into the hills only to return a minute later with their original numbers mysteriously replenished. During the brief intervals when Cary and Kennedy have no Indians close at hand they trade quips as they relentlessly pick off the Indian marksmen firing down on them from the hills overlooking their position.

A daring casting, considering the time
I saw this film in 1954 in Philadelphia. Was most elated to see the Katherine Dunham Company, the most famous dance company in the world at that time. Am curious as to why the U.S.A. (English) version is only 97 minutes and the Italian version is 110 minutes. What was cut from the film? I suspect it was Katherine Dunham's company performing with a mixed race company, still taboo at that time. Also not listed in the cast is Raimonda Orselli, a ballerina from the Rome Opera Ballet who joined the Katherine Dunham Company for this film. Regarding the title, it was definitely not about Mambo, which was the big dance craze in the U.S.A. at that time. Was probably titled "Mambo" to sell it. It was definitely a melodrama. Different, particularly in the casting, worthy of a study in the annals of film-making.

If there is such a thing like a German Musical - this is it: Glamorous, colorful, star-driven, funny and with some great songs, including the famous "Oh mein Papa", here sung by extremely pleasant to watch Lili Palmer. When a circus comes to a small German town, one of the families find out that the director is the long-lost brother of the respectful head of the family, a fact they would prefer to hide. The circus director's lovely wife manages to save the day and keep the daughter from running away with the circus. Also one of the early performances of Romy Schneider, pre-"Sissi", and you can understand why the German audience fell for her.

Textures of an English village Donat-style
Fans of Robert Donat will not want to miss this one. As I watched the film, with its strong and unflinching view of daily life in which the Church structures every act in every household, I kept thinking of Agatha Christie and her conception of Miss Marple's detection of crime in an English village. In Donat's parsonage, there are no murders, but there are small transgressions, which, in the large scheme of things, may matter little, but under the microscope of vicarage life, mean as much as a daughter's music career hinging on 20£s being too little.
Donat's character is reminiscent of Mr. Fred Rogers, of television fame, who just passed away. As with Mr. Rogers, his view of life is one of gentle humor and of quiet strength, always facing up to the challenge that each individual has in life when he is placed on this earth. The screen writer Eric Ambler is unknown to me, but his view of daily life in 1950's England, while a decade away from the war, was still one of struggle with a slightly grim, but not cheerless, overcast. The women are all strong, and, while the men not all good-looking, are a tad on the shrill and demanding side. We wonder if Donat's parson could survive without Kay Walsh's, and then the daughter Adrienne Corri's, constant ministrations, verbal and actual. The other women in the village also seem to be like harpies, which makes one wonder about the women in Ambler's life.
Adrienne Corri, unless I am mistaken, actually does play the piano in the film-- the big Romantic composers into which she pours her heart as an escape from the potentially stifling life in Hinton. We see her as a younger beauty in Jean Renoir's classic "The River," which she made just four years earlier. Her beau in the film is the young Denholm Elliott, who in a long and distinguished career, plays, here, a rather aggressive and unsympathetic, though professionally encouraging to Adrienne, church organist.
The movie is about character, and the performances remind us that ordinary life in a small English town revolved around the structure that religious life gave it, and that both pleasure and pain hinged on the degree of conformity that one presented to the outside world. Kay Walsh's character, both heroic and petty, also reminds us of how many vicar's wives have been sacrificed in real life to the altar of their husband's career and to fulfillig the lives of their children, through which they lived vicariously, as Mrs. Thorne through her daughter's musical talent.
This film was an Ealing Film Studio production, and like other Ealing products, bears an honesty and respect for the dignity of ordinary people in the telling of its story, regardless of the director. Is this saying too much for a movie company, or is it the English character? One has only to consider the other Ealing Studio films which Turner Movie Classics has made available from time to time, "The Magic Box" (another Donat classic), "Shiralee" (an early Peter Finch), as well as a number of great comedies, like "The Wrong Box," "Man in the White Suit" (an Alec Guinnes classic), and others, that poke fun at human nature and its foibles with a sense of manic pleasure, but never losing sight of gentle humanity.
"Lease of Life" was apparently the second to the last film that Donat made before he succumbed to chronic asthma, a tragedy as that ailment today can be so easily controlled. His last film "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" was ironically made for Hollywood, which he tended to avoid. In it he plays a dignified mandarin, both looking and speaking the part -- the only actor, in my experience, to have mastered the Chinese language in a western film.
For "Lease of Life" four**** out of five***** for its rarity.

Even better than the original
Sadly, remakes of successful movies are seldom as good as the original films. Destry -- director George Marshall's remake with Audie Murphy of Destry Rides Again, which starred Jimmy Stewart -- is one of the rare exceptions. No, Audie Murphy was not a better actor than Jimmy Stewart. But, given a good script and good direction, Audie Murphy was a far better actor than his many B movies would lead one to expect, and Destry was one of his best performances.
The fact that director George Marshall chose to remake his black and white Jimmy Stewart hit, Destry Rides Again, in Technicolor with Audie Murphy as Destry clearly indicates that Marshall felt his original film could be equaled or improved upon. And, in this viewers opinion, he was right. Both the original and the remake are good westerns but, if one can get past bias toward Jimmy Stewart -- and his co-star Marlene Dietrich -- and evaluate the movies purely on their merit, I believe that Audie Murphy's Destry is the better film. At worst, it is at least as good as the original and deserves to be recognized on its own merits.
