The crushing of a boys worship and spirit?

The Lone Hand is directed by George Sherman and written by Joseph Hoffman and Irving Ravetch. It stars Joel McCrea, Barbara Hale, Alex Nicol, Charles Drake, Jimmy Hunt and Jim Arness. A Technicolor production with cinematography by Maury Gertsman and music by Joseph Gershenson.

Zachary Hallock (McCrea), a hard working single parent, begins to destroy his sons love for him when he gives way to temptation and starts operating as an outlaw. But things are never as they seem in the town of Timberline.......

Unassuming 50s Oater with a twist in the tale and sumptuous photography around genuine Colorado locations. In essence it's the same as a number of "B" Western productions that filtered through the studio system in this particular decade, where small budgets were often overcome by good performances and integrity of script. The Lone Hand is told from a young boys point of view, with young Joshua Hallock (Hunt) even narrating to ensure the morality POV of the family drama hits the right spots. A turn of events in Ravetch's story will either annoy or pleasantly surprise you, but pic is never less than interesting and action is well marshalled by Sherman; who in turn is well served by the stunt men. The principal actors on show are engaging, especially an excellent Hale, Gershenson scores it with vibrant Western tones, while Gertsman's wonderful lensing of the scenery (Durango/Silverton) is reason enough for Western fans to seek this one out. 6/10

Escapade

"Estrapade" (Estrapado) was a horrible torture which I'm not going to depict here. The word sounds like "escapade" which means " gentle runaway".And "Rue De L'Escapade " was tailor made for such a movie, for the wife (A beaming Anne Vernon) ,tired of her husband's (handsome Louis Jourdan) infidelities ,runs away from marital home and rent a seedy tiny apartment in the working-class area of the city.

After a masterpiece such as "Casque D'Or" ,one of the peaks of the French cinema, anything would be a let down.Becker did not even try.His "Rue DE L'Estrapade" ,with the exception of his debut ("Dernier Atout" ) was his weakest film then.He was to sink lower with "Arsene Lupin" and his dismal "Ali Baba" -Fernandel in the title role!- before coming up with aces for his final -and perhaps most ambitious- chef d'oeuvre "Le Trou" ,maybe the best prison movie ever done.

"Rue De L'Estrapade" is a curious patchwork:it includes snatches of previous works :the chic world of fashion ("Falbalas" ) ,a little walk in the popular town ("Antoine Et Antoinette" ) Amorous Quarrel ("Edouard Et Caroline" ).If only he had borrowed from his three early major works ("Casque D'Or" ,"Rendez-Vous De Juillet" "Goupi Mains Rouges" ).It's pleasant enough with a nice appearance -at the 46th minute- by Daniel Gelin as a singer short of the readies performing Georges Brassens' lovely "Le Parapluie" .

Fans of Jacques Becker will like it;but a young person who wants to discover this great French director should pick up one of his four towering achievements:"Casque D'or" "Goupi Mains ROuges" "rendezvous De Juillet" and "Le Trou".

NB: a bisexual character (Jean Servais),which was risqué for the time.

Enjoyable, slick Euro adventure

This is a thoroughly enjoyable, slickly made European thriller starring American tough guy Eddie Constantine, who plays Johnny Jordan, a drifter who is hired by a Fat Man to find out who is hijacking his gun shipments. From a script that has the feel of a 40's Warner Bros film with Bogey, "Barder" is beautifully photographed (in glossy black and white). Studio interiors are expertly mixed with exotic location work, lending the film the look of a budget bigger than the one it most likely had. Light comic touches, (such as a plug-ugly nightclub bouncer who is constantly combing his hair or filing his nails), a supporting cast of beautiful dames (including the glamorous May Britt), assorted low-lifes (like a jealous, knife-throwing husband), and a climactic shoot-out in a lighthouse make the oddly-titled "There Goes Barder" an unexpected pulpy pleasure. (Though some references list this as directed by "John Berry", the on-screen credit reads "Directed by Jacques Lamare".)

Found a DVD at the Atlantic City Classic Auto show & Auction

This is based on a true story and I had the priviledge to fly with the co-pilot of that trip of Feb 3, 1943. His comment was that he didn't like the movie because they showed the co-pilot dieing in the movie. On Feb. 3, 1993,50th annaversary of the downing of the B-24 liberator/cargo version, I flew directly over Lac O'connor flying a trip from Frankfurt, Germany to Chicago, Ill. The Lat. and Long. is roughly N54:20 and W74:30. The movie didn't tell the whole story;although, very well done. There was a Northeast Airlines DC-3 down also. When they first found O'Connor and his crew, the NE Airline pilot thought he could just land and pick them up. When he touched down, he was buried in snow. They spent exactly 2 mos on the lake. They were flown out on April 3, 1943. If you can find a book by James Mangan called westward....... something or other, has a very factual run down. Try the C.R. Smith museum in Ft. Worth, TX.

Watch Plunder of the Sun Trailer :

Review :

thin but pungent noir

Thin, ultimately silly film is given unearned heft by virtue of Jack Draper's cinematography which turns ancient Mexican ruins into the nightmare city of classic noir, the wet streets and shadowy alleys that are the essence of the genre. Glenn Ford is sour and surly as an American insurance man who travels the tropics with a full wardrobe of tweed suits (maybe that's why he's so grim). Down on his luck in a vividly evoked pre-Castro Cuba, he signs on to smuggle a certain antiquity BACK into the Mexico from whence it came for reaasons that never make much sense. Soon there are three or four factions vying for whatever he has taped under his left nipple: a sleazy archaeologist (Sean McClory), an American hot thang with plasticene-brassiere breasts that jut like nose cones (Dianna Lynne), a sultry hispanic gal (Patricia Medina), and finally some kind of Mexican expert and his thug son. There's too much fist fighting over a gun--Glenn and Sean duke it out about four times over Sean's Colt Detective Special--and the whole thing never makes much sense. But damn, it looks GREAT! Don't know who this Draper guy is--he seems mostly to have worked in Mexico--but his deep focus photography really brings the location to menacing, palpable life. The best passage follows as Ford evokes the ruins and what they mean to dim, pointy-titted Lynne, and it's pre-PC so he's able to make vivid the human sacrifice that blasphemed the place and thus give it a vibration of tragedy and death otherwise unearned in the movie. The other delight is McClory's debauched archaeologist, under a blonde crewcut and some heavy tortoise-shell specs. He's very vivid and far more charismatic than the dreary, mumbly Ford The movie really looses it in its climax, and ends in a silly shootout and fistfight in a backlot Hollywood set that wastes all the good will it had built up with the location work; suddenly, it looks like early TV and in a sense it has become early TV.

Review :

Good movie for train buffs and some surprisingly good acting.

Those who put down B type movies will most likely automatically put down this movie. But don't be so quick to judge. I'll agree that it is far from being an Academy Award winner, but that is due more to poor dialog writing and cheaper sets than the acting. In fact, I was very surprised to see so many first class character actors in the movie. The lead,Gloria Swanson,is a movie actress traveling with her young daughter on the Santa Fe's Super Chief to California. She meets a professor on the train and falls for him, tired of the Hollywood types. I love traveling by train which made the movie more appealing to me. Yes, some of the sets that were supposed to be inside a train were obviously on a stage somewhere, but not badly done. There was also some outside footage shot of "real" 1950's SF engines and passenger cars along the way and at stops. There is eating in the dinning car, sitting in the club car and the observation car. Many were stage sets with scenes running in the background for passing landscape, but fun none the less. As most know, the movie stars of the 1950's were constantly traveling back and forth by train between Chicago and California. During the trip, Swanson's agent tries to talk her into publicity she doesn't want to do. People in stuffed shirts probably shouldn't watch it as it's not top shelf, but it is worth watching as low key 1950's fun. If you are interested in looking behind the history of actors in a movie, stick with me. Let's start first with the leads of Gloria Swanson and James Warren. Of course Swanson was the professional actress she portrayed. However I felt no attraction to her or the male lead. James Warren will probably be accused of being wooden or stiff but let's remember that, that was the exact part he was playing. He was a geeky college professor who falls in love with a movie star on a long distance train trip. He actually did a good job given the part and dialog provided and he reminded me of a young Sterling Hayden. He did only one more movie, then returned to his first love of art and illustrating. Although he didn't have the charm of a Gary Cooper, he did an adequate job. Gloria Swanson's history is well known including her Sunset Blvd. Off screen she had an affair with Joseph Kennedy (President Kennedy's father) who produced her in "Queen Kelly". Swanson's autobiography was in response to information in Rose Kennedy's autobiography. Gloria's first marriage was to one of my favorites - Wallce Beery. The number of top character actors in "Three for Bedroom C" was amazing, with familiar faces popping into the picture. Let's start with Gloria's agent in the movie played by Fred Clark, who was also in Sunset Blvd. with her. He supported in many works on TV and movies but I remember him best playing Harry Morton the neighbor on "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show". He was also in Rosalind Russell's "Auntie Mame". Then came was Hans Conried, remembered right away as Uncle Tonoose from the Danny Thomas show on TV. As a character actor he had a long list of accomplishments and was a member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre and the voice of Captain Hook in Disney's Peter Pan. The little girl in this movie was played by Janine Perreau. She was so good I can't believe she had a short career. Probably the old going from child actor to adult problem. She played her part perfectly though. She has a sister GiGi who had more luck in the movie business. Toward the end Steve Brodie from many TV shows made his appearance just when I thought they were finished popping in supporting actors. Then sitting there in the club car and playing an old alcoholic was one of the best professionals, Percy Helton, who often played the timid little man in more movies and TV shows than I can think of. He had that wispy voice from shouting himself hoarse in a part many years before. He was the drunk Santa in Miracle On 34th Street and was the train conductor in Music Man. The train steward in this one was was played by Ernest Anderson who also played a porter in North by Northwest, and George M Cohan's valet in Yankee Doodle Dandy. Here he was the ever patient Fred Johnson who helped along the romance with good advice to anyone smart enough to ask for it, and played the part intelligently. There is a part for famous Margaret Dumont whom Groucho Marks called "practically the fifth Marx brother". Then near the end came another familiar face as a photographer - Jimmy Dodd whom you will remember as the adult Mousketeer on Disney's Mickey Mouse Show when he sang songs on each show and led the group as Jimmy. And you will also recognize the train conductor as Charles Lane. He was a supporting character actor in a whole list of movies and TV shows. Remember him as Mr. Potter's tax man in It's A Wonderful Life? Yes, that's him, always a curt, no-nonsense part. As you can see, the supporting actors and actresses in Bedroom C really make the movie worth watching in addition to the train travel theme. If you watch it you are not going to come away with some great message long remembered. However, you will enjoy some lighthearted thoughts of yesteryear's movies and train travel. It's not a must see, but if you get a chance, why not?

April fools

In the wake of the huge success of "Le Corniaud" and "La Grande Vadrouille" ," Poisson D'Avril" was theatrically re-released in the mid-sixties in France and it is sure easy to see why:it was the first time comic superstars Bourvil and Louis De Funès had played together, and they thought it was the right time to capitalize on the success of this golden pair.

Actually ,De Funès has only one scene (a five-minute appearance ) and it can, from that point of view ,be considered a shameless exploitation of the commercial phenomenon.

That said,Gilles Grangier is not lacking in practical experience ,and although his metier was essentially the thriller in the fifties ,he made an entertaining (and often very funny) comedy in the grand tradition of what the French call 'Théâtre De Boulevard ".The scene of the chic dinner in the luxury house ,where Bourvil and Pierre Duc tell their war "memories" is hilarious .Good support by Annie Cordy who often played with Bourvil ,not only in the movies, but also on stage .

Anything for an inheritance

Titus Muller loves dogs, but as a postman he gets little love in return. Still, he has a lovely wife and lots of red haired offspring. When all of them get invited to see their auntie Anna in Italy, they travel there by bicycle. It soon becomes clear that wealthy old Anna has invited no less than 132 members of the Muller family to her enormous mansion to find out which one of them is best suited to look after her dog. All of them line up in a degrading line so this nasty Queen Elizabeth II lookalike can dismiss them one by one. I bet you can guess which family she picks, or else the movie would be over pretty soon.

When they finally sign the contract, the soundtrack score blazes like some kind of biblical epic. Obviously money is holy to these people. The dog sets it's paw print and the family moves into the mansion. Some time later, and for no good reason at all, the old bankers sing a song for Titus, and after this Dick van Dyke routine Heinz Ruhmann gets to do his Chaplin imitation once again when he stumbles home drunk.

Now a national hero, women start throwing themselves at Titus feet but he remains true to his Kaninchen (as he calls his wife). Unfortunately, when one of their own little Opie's accuses him of infidelity, his 'bunny' sides with the kid. Actually, the dog is the frisky one in this family: after a romp in a haystack with another canine (thankfully only implied), this spoiled rich pup goes home, closes the door behind him (!) and leaves another knocked up girlfriend standing on the porch.

A depressed Titus gets drunk again (but less amusingly so) and wakes up next to Miss Belle, the cabaret star. From there on it is all downhill for Herr Muller, because the usual message in these comedies of inheritance is: a simple hard working life is better than a stack full of money. The exception is if you use your wealth for one good deed early on in the picture, then everything will turn out alright.

one of Betty's best

Betty's last major film for her home studio Pararmount was one of her best. Her acting is toned down, her singing is warm and mellow. Vocal surgery had kept her from the shouting type of singing she did so in a way this was a more mature role for her. Ralph Meeker is good as her husband Benny Fields. The sets, costumes and color are very lush and typical of the big studio's fifties product. Billy Bird is a riot as Betty's companion. Ironically,in real life Blossom Seely did retire so Benny Fields could be the star of the family but his career fizzled and he retired a year later, also. There was a soundtrack issued at the time but it hasn't resurfaced. I never was a big fan of Hutton's but thought her role in this film was very good.

Review :

A tinpot classic with charm and presence

A low key monster movie from producer Roger Corman (his first) and director Wyott Ordung. What struck me as creepy were the rules the monster played by -- werewolf rules. He only came out at night and he only came into his own when the moon was full. He didn't rush about like one of those "humanoids from the deep" (another Corman production) and he didn't eat flesh (cow excepted). He simply menaced and eliminated his enemies off-screen. I liked that. I could handle that.

I was always very impressed by the pedal-powered submarine. It was like something the Professor from "Gilligan's Island" might have pieced together. I wanted one of those. It reeked of adventure. I was also impressed by the film's title, an evocative title if ever there was one. I loved the title "Monster From The Surf", too, but after suffering through that one, I was happy to stick to the ocean floor.

The score, as mentioned by another reviewer, really is effective and plain eerie, and the film's cinematography never betrays its poverty row budget.

Corman knew, from the beginning, that good characters are the foundation of any good movie, whatever its genre, and this, his first, is a tinpot classic with charm and presence.

Review :

An interesting window into the times....

Nowadays, it's easy for folks to make fun of the Cold War era--and in particular the paranoid 1950s. However, given the proliferation of atomic weapons and a vow from Stalin to destroy the West, it's understandable why so many films of the time were about Communist plots or giant mutant creatures created through atomic fission. So when I see "The 49th Man", I see its plot as a definite product of these scary times--a time when it seemed very possible that the human race would wipe itself out sooner or later. Because of this, the film is a lot more tense than most films--even if the plot is a little far-fetched.

The film begins with a scary discovery--a portion of an atomic bomb is found amidst car wreckage! And, scientists examining it have determined that the weapon has been broken down into dozens are pieces--and each can be easily transported by an enemy agent (i.e., a Commie!). So, it's up to John Ireland (a great Noir actor) to track down the agents and get to the bottom of this plot against America.

Taut action and good acting carry the day here. While this is not a fancy big-budget film, it is entertaining and a great window into a very tense era.

Watch Fighter Attack Trailer :

Review :

Lighter Attack.

Little seen or remembered, Fighter attack is a very ordinary World War II film that can only be recommended to the staunchest of Sterling Hayden fans. Set in Nazi occupied Italy, story finds Hayden's fighter pilot forced to ditch behind enemy lines when his mission goes awry. Finding help from Italian partisans, and having his head turned by a shapely Joy Page, film builds to the inevitable conclusion where the mission will finally be accomplished and the hero gets the girl.

There really isn't much more to it than that, it's a standard time filler that plods along ponderously until the action picks up for the finale, all five minutes of it! The print I witnessed was washed out in colour, so that didn't help matters, but really this is a picture of very little redeeming qualities outside of Hayden's butch machismo and J.Carrol Naish's fun performance as Italian resistance leader Bruno. 5/10
