Some of Tarzan's Best Friends Are Elephants.

For the fifth and final Tarzan film starring Lex Barker it was not only back to the RKO back lot, but back to the old days when the natives that Tarzan was helping were not even black. In fact Tarzan spends most of the time in chains because he's broken hearted because he thinks the villains have killed Jane.

Jane is played here by Joyce McKenzie and the trio of villains are Tom Conway, Raymond Burr, and Monique Van Vooren, the last being the she-devil in the title. No black magic does she use, simply some feminine wiles and an appeal to Tarzan that since Jane is dead, he can best help by making sure that her two male conspirators don't go too hard on the natives they've enslaved, especially Raymond Burr who is on a power kick.

The trio is after ivory and they've captured a whole tribe of to do their heavy work as ivory hunting legal or not requires a lot of help.

But as we know from many a Tarzan film in the past, the elephants are among his best jungle friends and they help out a lot in rescuing Jane and the natives and Tarzan later in typical elephant fashion. Of course the elephants are also acting on their own rational self interest since they have no desire to wind up piano keys.

RKO did the first film with Gordon Scott as Tarzan and then bid adieu to the Tarzan franchise. With Scott the series began to get a bit more realistic in the plots and also reflected the new Africa emerging in the Sixties. Tarzan And The She-Devil is a piece of high camp, but that's about the only way it can be enjoyed.

Rex Allen and Slim Pickens are sent from Washington, D.C. to California in 1850 to speed up deliveries of mail to the goldfields, and find a destructive feud raging between two stage-line owners, Sam Sawyer and John Brockway. In their attempts to have their stages and drivers first on the dock to get the mail brought East by ship, the two have damaged each other's equipment and schedules to the point that no consignment of mail reaches the goldfields intact or on time. The on-purpose carelessness of the crewmen of the McCall Shipping Line adds to the problem. Rex's proposal that Brockway institute an overland mail service along the Iron Mountian Trail to compete with the McCall ship, meets with vicious opposition from Roger McCall, who also knows that his attempts to sabotage the Brockway plan will be blamed on Sawyer and he engineers a stampede of the horse herd Brockway buys for his new service. Brockway catches McCall's henchmen setting fire to his barn and is murdered. McCall ...

"Why you old cinder, you couldn't kill a dead fish with a cannon."

I must say, "Iron Mountain Trail" is one of the better "B" Westerns coming out of Republic Pictures in the 1950's. It stars a spirited Rex Allen in a tale involving not two, but three competing factions for the rights to a U.S. postal contract between San Francisco and San Diego. The leading contender at the film's opening is the McCall Shipping Lines, using a sea route between the two cities, while the Brockway Stage Line has been feuding with the Sawyer Express Company on land. Allen's character is a government postal inspector, not exactly impartial, who attempts to find a quicker and safer route for the mail to travel.

A contest develops between the three companies, with the winner to receive a two hundred thousand dollar contract to deliver the mail. The obligatory bad guy in this piece is Roger McCall (Grant Withers), owner of the McCall Shipping Lines, who first attempts to disrupt his opposition by stampeding a herd of horses needed to make the long distance between cities. Allen and Brockway driver Slim Pickens manage to salvage twenty horses, more than enough to make the run, so McCall gets more deadly. Having the Brockway owner killed and pinning it on Sam Sawyer (Forrest Taylor), McCall positions his captain, Mate Orrin (Roy Barcroft) to win the race.

Smelling a rat, Rex Allen gets to work, enlisting the aid of Nancy Sawyer (Nan Leslie), while taking charge of a stagecoach riding the Iron Mountain Trail. With Pickens as his sidekick, the pair are unsuccessful as a bad guy posse herds the stage over a damaged bridge and into the drink. But it gets worse - Nancy's father is railroaded by a quick hanging judge, based on public demand for justice and to avert the threat of a mob.

Before it's all over, Rex and Slim (appearing under their own names) uncover a shady operation McCall uses to staff his ship; a crooked bartender slips unsuspecting cowboys a mickey and they wind up hijacked. Allen's too sharp though, and rides to the rescue just in time to prevent an innocent man from hanging and to win the mail contract for the good guys - whew!

Rex Allen was one of the few "B" movie cowboys to continue his career in TV. There were Roy, Gene and Hoppy of course, though Allen's character was Dr. Bill Baxter, "Frontier Doctor" for one season in 1958. As a medical practitioner, Allen didn't get to mix it up much with a six gun, and the stories were so laid back as to be almost boring. By contrast, his portrayal in "Iron Mountain Trail" is energetic, complemented by a no nonsense aim and shoot style with his firearm.

Virtually all the movie cowboys came co-billed with their horses. Roy Rogers' Trigger is the most well known as "The Smartest Horse in the Movies". By contrast, Allen's mount Koko was nicknamed "The Miracle Horse of the Movies". Unfortunately, he doesn't perform any in this flick, though he's mentioned once by name. On the other hand, Koko plays second fiddle to a sneaker wearing chimp named Marie in this one. Too bad Marie is owned by bad guy Barcroft, though she winds up on the right side of the law by film's end - you can't make a monkey out of justice, even in a "B" Western!

Competent action/historical romance

Ricardo Montalban was the perfect choice for the role of Pietro. Passionate and handsome, he can show anger and righteous zeal one minute and his tender feelings for Iolanthe, his true love, the next, despite the formidable odds against them. He needed all the anger he could muster, since his own father was beheaded by his true love's father, the cruel overlord of the region where Pietro was born, in medieval Italy. He spends most of the film trying to wreak vengeance on Iolanthe's family while trying to rescue her from their evil clutches.

Frank Yerby's novel of the same name is one of my favorites, and if you find it it's worth the read. Much more detailed than the film.

William Castle seems an odd choice for directing this kind of film, but this was one of the last normal films he did before he embarked on his famous horror film streak. Don't miss Combat!'s Rick Jason in the role of one of Iolanthe's evil brothers.

Review :

undemanding fun

A far cry from the pomp and spectacle of Lean's later, grandiose productions, this gently romantic comedy of manners is based on Harold Brighouse's 1915 play, and sits alongside Great Expectations and Brief Encounter as one of the best films he made in black and white. Lean's restrained direction allows the sparkling scripts pithy banter plenty of room to breathe, whilst deftly avoiding the static wordiness inherent to most stage for screen adaptations.

At its core, Hobson's Choice has a towering performance by Charles Laughton, whose Henry Hobson is a marvelous mixture of snarling brute and whimpering child, huffing and sputtering his way through scene after scene of delightfully sexist dialogue. Crucially however, Laughton resists the temptation to go over the top, instead keeping his Hobson firmly on the plausible side of caricature, thus ensuring that the pathos of this potentially unlikeable character remains firmly intact, and whilst we eagerly await his comeuppance, we never lose sympathy for the curmudgeonly old fogey. Also outstanding is Brenda De Banzie as the long suffering but incredibly strong willed Maggie, an amazingly strong female character, made all the more remarkable given that the film has its origins in a text now 90 years old.

The crisp black and white photography, courtesy of Jack Hildyard(who also collaborated with Lean on his epic Bridge on the River Kwai) is stunning, beautifully capturing the grimy charm of its Victorian setting, and giving a vivid sense of gritty imtimacy to the dank interiors. Scenes featuring a drunken Hobson are gloriously realised, and gives rise to one of the films most enduring images, that of Hobson attacking the moons reflection in a puddle. Likewise, production design is impeccable, the crews recreation of Victorian era Salford even stretched to Lean throwing rubbish into the river Irwell(the council, on hearing that a film was to be made on location there, spared no expense clearing the riverbanks and water of any such refuse the week before cast and crew arrived, oblivious to the fact that this disarray was precisely the reason Lean and co. had chosen to shoot there).

This amiable comedy is often overlooked in favour of Leans more epic works, but to dismiss it out of hand as something the director cut his teeth on before moving on to better and brighter things would be a grave error. Its unassuming nature, and admittedly slightly saggy third act aside, it's a film with considerable charm, wit, eccentric characters and some hilarious set pieces.

Review :

Not so much a movie as a raid on the combat footage library

This film, with the merest of story lines to hold it together, is really just an excuse to cobble together stock combat footage, both American and German, of a mixture of American bombers, mostly B-25 Mitchells, but also B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-24 Liberators, and an occasional B-26 Marauder, all of which get intercut without regard to any sense of continuity. All cockpit interiors are of a B-25, interior fuselage shots appear to be B-26s, and in the latter half of this so-called "film", on a mission in B-24s, the close-up of the cockpit is a B-26. High-level B-24 group footage is mixed with Ploesti low-level training and mission footage without any regard to believability. Several crash sequences created for the movie are hokey-looking models. What little new-shot footage of flying done is all of training B-25s in a southwestern U.S. location without unit markings or tailcodes, intercut with stock footage of flying formations in combat paintschemes. The same stock shots of German 88 mm. anti-aircraft guns are reused several times.

When the main pilot's "B-24" is hit, the long-shot of it going down is a Boeing B-17, followed by a cheesy Liberator model crashing. Cut to five "survivors", supposedly down in Yugoslavia, who are repatriated within minutes, with the film wrapping up almost immediately thereafter.

As for a plot, there really isn't one. Bad acting, poor script - stay away from this stinker unless you just want to see combat film.

Review :

PROFOUNDLY MOVING and BRILLIANT; Ferrer was never better!

With the appearance of the 2001 movie entitled "Moulin Rouge" (see review) I went back to the Jose Ferrer version to add a review of it. Note that both films are entirely different in style and purpose; to equate them is to compare apples to pineapples.

This version, so well directed by John Huston, is not a wild frenetic musical but a very touching and moving character study of the great artist Henri Toulose-Lautrec, whose legs were badly mishappen and shortened by an accident early in his life leaving him basically a midget. His frustration at his appearance, and unattractiveness to women, forever scarred his short life that was curtailed by drink and other excess. Jose Ferrer was superb as this tortured yet brilliant soul; Ferrer also played expertly Henri's powerful father descended from French nobility.

"Moulin Rouge" began with a long scene in the club itself filled with dancing, exciting music, beautiful women, good friends, and lots of drink. The sets and costumes and were colorful and beautiful. After about half an hour we follow Henri home - and we see him, alone, so short and vulnerable, walking all alone through the dark streets of Paris. The contrast was most effective. Such was the REALITY of Henri's life. The remainder of the film focused on his unsatisfactory relationship with a prostitute he befriends, along with flashbacks to his privileged wealthy childhood.

Perhaps the most emotional scene was at the end. With Henri dying in his bed his father there tells him that he is the first living artist to be honored by having his work displayed at the Louvre. As he appealed for forgiveness for his previously harsh treatment, saying "I didn't understand", all Henri's old friends from the Moulin Rouge, as spirits (or hallucinations), visited him.

Like with the fine movie about Van Gogh, "Lust for Life", this even better movie is not necessarily always true to historical fact, but it is a cinematic classic.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
