Review :

More surreal than surrealistic

A small town by the shore of a deep, dark river is ruled by death. Its people live by a code of honor that encourages them to take revenge for any form of insult, no matter how insignificant. A seemingly never ending blood feud ravages the town, as the men, one by one, kill each other proudly, embracing their acts of murder with a sense of mission. Vengeance is considered not so much a crime as an act of courage. However, if a murderer manages to escape without being killed in return, he's banished from the town and left with no option but to cross the river and to live on the desolate, opposite shore. The dead are also taken across the river, inside their coffin, and buried in a distant cemetery. Few are those who oppose this violent way of life and little is what they can do about it. Gerardo, a young man of modern thought who studied medicine in the nearest big city, must return to his hometown and try to put an end to this delirious, anachronistic, macho gun culture.

The story and the dialogues are great, and so is the acting! Like in much of Buñuel's other work, a terrible, dreamlike beauty emerges as man's passions and ignorant values devour virtue. In this case, sin appears not so much in the form of lust but of a ferocious sense of vanity (disguised as "honor").

Though quite surreal in essence, the film feels more mainstream than the director's work from later decades. The humor here, though clearly present in the absurdity of the situation, is relatively restrained, and the music is at times a little bit campy. The story itself is linear and fairly straight-forward. The ending is perhaps the only small disappointment, not so much because it's so atypical for a Buñuel film, but because it's so sudden.

The black and white photography is very decent, although the image quality of the DVD that I watched was a little bit deteriorated. It would be a real treat to watch an enhanced version.

I hardly doubt that anyone considers this one of Buñuel's unique masterpieces, but it's still a great, extremely enjoyable film with a strong message and, personally, I highly recommend watching it.

Grand hope and grand illusion.

This Italian movie is only incidentally about life aboard a submarine during the Second World War. It is no epic adventure like the more famous DAS BOOT or RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP. Rather it is a quiet reflective anti-war film about the dilemmas of good human beings trapped by the exigencies and ironies of war. The captain of this submarine, played with stature by Renato Baldini, is a good man, whose sense of humanity is tested to the limit. He rescues from drowning a group of mostly British sailors (including a woman, played by Lois Maxwell). He then, in very Italian fashion, invites them aboard until he can deposit them in the neutral port of Santa Maria in the Azores. The same thing happens with a group of Danish sailors. This time there is no room on board and the survivors must remain perilously on deck and perhaps die if the captain needs to submerge to attack another target. The nicest scene in the movie is the Christmas party on board complete with makeshift Christmas tree, decorations, carols, the exchange of good cheer and words of friendship between rescuers and `captives.' It all comes to a stark halt when the Danish ship is spotted and must be destroyed. The tree, the decorations get cast aside. Without sermonizing, this movie makes its point very effectively, and for that reason is worth seeing. The original title means `The Great Hope.' Its US title was `Submarine Attack.' This is a telling change, in that a `great hope' for peace doesn't sell tickets. The violence implied in the phrase `submarine attack' has more audience clout. Oh, well. The US release was dubbed, rather badly, into English and the synchronization, whenever there is any singing, is fairly dreadful. Nino Rota, who provided the music for many great Fellini films and Coppola's The Godfather movies, scored this one too.

Inside Hollywood

A truly memorable film with tough and rugged, but hardly handsome, Jack Palance as Charlie Castle playing of all people an actor who's always playing matinée Idols and great lovers. As Charlie's boss and studio owner Stanley Hoff,Rod Steiger, says of him throughout the film :"He makes all the women of America heart's swoon". "The Big Knife" is worth the price of admission just to see how and if director Robert Aldrich can pull it off and make the film both entertaining and believable.

You see Charlie is getting tired of playing all those roles over the years as a heart throb to the women of America and wants to get out of his contract with the Hoff Studios and go independent; That was a big thing for actors back in the 1950's. Charlie wan't to do films that are worthy of his extraordinary talents as a serious and Shakespearian actor. It's that Charlie's off the wall and possessive boss Stanley Hoff, the Big Knife, doesn't want his meal ticket to leave and take his fans with him! So Stanley rolls out the heavy artillery and plays his trump card. It seems that Charlie has a dark secret that the studio has been covering up for years and if Charlie leaves that secret won't be a secret any more! Get It Charlie!

The film "The Big Knife" can really be described as one of the most multi storied soap operas ever put on film with the audience needing score cards just to keep up with the story and even then they'll get lost. Whoever coined the phrase "Seeing is believing" must have based it on the the incredible performance of Rod Steiger's Stanley Hoff which goes from a Saturday Night Live impersonation shtick of a big Hollywood producer to an Oscar winning interpretation of Hamlet all at the same time! It's really incredible to watch and believe what your seeing in Steiger's over the top performance.

And Jack Palance, determined not to be shown up his co-star, really did pull it off in him Playing a role so out of character and yet evoking real and genuine sympathy from the audience that he should have, but didn't, won the 1955 Academy Award for best actor hands down! As the tortured soul with a dark past who only wanted to do Art Films and get away from playing debonair and charming movie parts that make women go ape all over him. In the end of the film when Palance went all out, or was it underwater, in the final few minutes of the movie he was so convincing that I just couldn't keep the tears from rolling down my cheeks!

No matter how much people criticize Robert Aldrich's "The Big Knife" and with good justification this is one movie where you can really say that the acting actually overwhelmed the script!

Enjoyable, slick Euro adventure

This is a thoroughly enjoyable, slickly made European thriller starring American tough guy Eddie Constantine, who plays Johnny Jordan, a drifter who is hired by a Fat Man to find out who is hijacking his gun shipments. From a script that has the feel of a 40's Warner Bros film with Bogey, "Barder" is beautifully photographed (in glossy black and white). Studio interiors are expertly mixed with exotic location work, lending the film the look of a budget bigger than the one it most likely had. Light comic touches, (such as a plug-ugly nightclub bouncer who is constantly combing his hair or filing his nails), a supporting cast of beautiful dames (including the glamorous May Britt), assorted low-lifes (like a jealous, knife-throwing husband), and a climactic shoot-out in a lighthouse make the oddly-titled "There Goes Barder" an unexpected pulpy pleasure. (Though some references list this as directed by "John Berry", the on-screen credit reads "Directed by Jacques Lamare".)

A reply to the previous comment--

I feel almost provoked to comment on this film here, and I say this not as an especially religious person (which I am not), but as someone who feels that a film should not be unfairly criticized because of someone's faulty--or would it be more accurate to say willfully (?) -- distorted summary of the plot.

SPOILERS AHEAD

To begin with, Marcelino is bitten by the scorpion while he is playing outside the monastery, but at no point in the film does he ask to see the crucifix for any reason. He has been frightened by tales of a "bogeyman" in the attic by the monks, who wish him to stay away from it. OUT OF CURIOSITY, and for no other reason, he ventures in, sees the Christ figure, thinks it is the feared bogeyman, and tears back down the stairs. (The figure, incidentally, is a beautiful wooden carving, not gory in the least.)

After an unfortunate incident, in which he is taken to a festival and unwittingly causes a commotion by accidentally letting some animals run wild, the new mayor, an enemy of the monks who have raised Marcelino, swears to shut down the monastery. Marcelino is given the silent treatment by the monks, and it is then that he goes again to the attic, realizes the "bogeyman" is only a statue of Christ, remarks that it looks hungry, steals some bread, and offers it to the statue. It is then that a miracle occurs---the statue comes to life, eats the bread, and eventually, because of Marcelino's repeated visits, becomes Marcelino's teacher and confidant (Marcelino realizes who he is). And the vision is *not* a hallucination. The statue's final act in the film is intended only as a reward for Marcelino's kind actions, and it is done at Marcelino's innocent, but completely self-aware, request.

This is by no means a vicious, sadistic film; it is a beautiful, gentle one. It is a pity that there are those who would distort its meaning.

Now I understand why the Nouvelle Vague was so necessary.

I waited a long time to see this adaptation of Zola's famous novel but was really disappointed by the slow pace, the stilted dialogue (badly subtitled as well, in the VHS tape I saw) and the unimaginative camera work. It's pretty clear that this is precisely the type of post-WWII studio film against which Truffaut and Godard rebelled. And thank God they did, because their work is so much more interesting than period potboilers like this one. Martine Carol is vivacious and charming, but with limited acting ability. To be fair, "Nana" is the type of actress who is renowned for her fabulous body and her bold display thereof, rather than for any kind of musical or dramatic skills. (Sound familiar, Hollywood?) Also, as a plus, the film is very frank about how Nana earns a living outside of her stage appearances, and how her entourage skims off her fees by providing either information or access. I found this candor refreshing since most Hollywood movies of this era are very coy about whoring. Think about the presentation of Jo Van Fleet in "East of Eden," for example. Charles Boyer plays the male lead here, a hypocritical aristocrat in the Emperor's employ, but it's an unsatisfying part. It's all about "Nana," and in the end, being the selfish little baggage she is, she would prefer it that way.

Tight Identification, Neat Closure

This is a much better Technicolor production than many of the other Castle films of the era. Castle brings back his oblique staging/blocking and adds some interesting low and high angle shots (which had been poorly employed in preceding Castle films) in order to develop a clear psychological motivation for the titular character. The shot-reverse-shot construction is more subtle than previous Technicolor Castle films, making the suture smoother and thus more endearing for the spectator. Depth of field creeps back into Castle's stylistic system in this film, aided by picturesque natural exteriors. Castle plays around with montage again, purposeful as ellipsis and appropriate to plot progression. I am reserved in labeling certain elements of the production as budget due to the possibility of a poor transfer for the copy I viewed (in particular I am referring to the cross-cut shots of wild animals). The script is more natural and a nice fit for the milieu of the film - real people talking honestly to each other. Pace slows and shot-reverse-shot construction gets sloppy half way through the film but is compensated for by some frantic action sequences that distinguish a morality for Ford's character that drives the rest of the narrative forward. There is a nice song (musical number) tri-functional as entr'acte for the story, prompt for budding romantic subplots and homage to the chanchadas of Brazil (ironic, given that after all the Columbia Pictures distribution of Castle's films that The Americano was released through RKO). It was at this time that Columbia Pictures's exploitation of the Brazilian film market was reaching critical mass and spurring the development of the Cinema Novo counter-cinema movement. Dramatic confessions under extreme duress perfectly mirror Castle's The Chance of a Lifetime (1943) and tease out a neat closure to a film that operated with few plot contrivances.

Two Brothers At The Naval Academy

When I reviewed the film Annapolis that starred James Franco and Tyrese Gibson a few years ago I remarked that one of the big flaws I found in that film was the lack of anything resembling academics in the film. That is made up for in An Annapolis Story where you do see a well rounded depiction of the experience of being a midshipman there. But in fact romantic rivalry comes before anything else in this film.

The rivalry is between two brothers attending the Naval Academy post World War II. One brother got an appointment through the ranks as a veteran of the Navy, Kevin McCarthy. The second is younger brother John Derek who got it via academics and a Congressional appointment.

These brothers have a bit of a rivalry going in everything from academics to athletics. Both are on the football team, McCarthy a by the book type and Derek inclined to go out on his own. The rivalry is friendly until Derek starts making moves on McCarthy's long time girl Diana Lynn. Then it gets quite ugly.

It continues right through Naval Air Training in Pensacola and into the Korean War when both become fighter pilots on those new jets. As to what happens and who Lynn chooses in the end you'll have to see the film to find out.

A lot of good newsreel footage for the combat scenes and location shooting at the Naval Academy helps this film out in so many ways. Having been to the Naval Academy several years ago, I can testify not too much has changed for the more recent Annapolis or from the time An Annapolis Story was filmed there. An Annapolis Story is a decent B film from Allied Artists and a sincere tribute to the midshipmen who have graduated there and whom this country owes so much.

And it's to the Naval Academy and every midshipman whoever attended since the 1840s when it was founded that this review is respectfully dedicated.

Wisdom carries the whole film – one of his better vehicles

Norman is the oldest orphan at Greenwood's orphanage who now works there in return for free board. Norman is always trying to give the orphans a good life but all that is threatened when Mr Bigley announces he is going to sell the property for industrial use, Norman takes action to prevent the sale.

I'm not a huge Wisdom fan but I have seen many of this films. So I know that I do enjoy his brand of humour and know he can be really funny in a gentle way when the film allows him to be. Here the basic plot is only a step to several funny scenes – Norman entered in a walking race, Norman fleeing the police in a toy car, Norman in a train carriage with a group of upper-class stiffs etc. Most of the film is little to do with the plot described above. It's only the final scene where the orphans repel the adults that brings it back to the central idea, however that doesn't mean it's no good. My personal favourite is the scene where Norman gets mistaken for a conductor because he's holding a candy floss stick and gets bungled in front of an orchestra at a concert- again little to do with the plot, but still funny!

The actual set-ups for Wisdom to do his stuff are all pretty funny and don't feel forced despite not fitting naturally into the plot. The humour is gentle and when Norman is doing it he really gives his all. He'll never be respected like some other comedians but here he shows that he is a genius and can work gags well in his own style. In other films he has suffered from a lack of a good support cast, but here he is pretty much carrying the whole thing and does it very well. Some may dislike the cute kids aspect of the film but it's only the end where they get much input. Rice and Abicair are OK but it's nice to see a young Thora Hird before her stair-lift adverts paid her way!

Overall this is funny, gentle comedy Wisdom style. Those that hate his basic style will dislike this but fans will love it and it's good enough to win over new viewers. Definitely one of Wisdom's better films – and that's without the sterling support of regular's Desmonde and Chapman.

Ahead Of Its Time

Cary Scott (Jane Wyman) is a middle-aged, wealthy woman whose husband recently died. Ron Kirby (Rock Hudson) is Cary's younger, independent-minded landscape gardener. Ron reads Thoreau, respects nature, and values simplicity and honesty. Cary and Ron are attracted to each other. For Ron, marriage to Cary is an easy decision. But for Cary, the decision to marry Ron is harder. She must confront the disapproval of her grown children, and the disapproval of friends whose materialistic, country club values are inconsistent with the values of Thoreau.

In a town where people know each other's business, tongues wag. Feelings get hurt. Conflict erupts. The film's subdued lighting and vivid colors, combined with soft piano and velvety violin background music, create a tone that is sad and sentimental. Viewers are right to say that this Douglas Sirk directed film is a melodramatic soap opera.

Thinly veiled behind the simple plot, however, lies a profound message: "to thine own self be true". It is a message totally out of sync with 1950's America. Yet, the message would surface a decade later as the 1960's youth mantra: "do your own thing".

As an archetype, Ron seems too pure. And Cary's children and friends, shallow, selfish, vain, gossipy, and judgmental, are easy to dislike. This sharp dichotomy is somewhat unrealistic. But it gets the point across. And that point is a blistering indictment of 1950's American materialism and mindless conformity.

The film was thus ahead of its time. Despite its high technical quality, it was snubbed by the Oscars. In retrospect, "All That Heaven Allows" is superior to all five of the Oscar best picture nominees from that year. And its message is just as relevant now as it was fifty years ago.

A rather good little Columbia western

This movie was produced by Wallace Mc Donald, and not Sam Katzman, as we could have expected from a Columbia Pictures film. This not a corny western, but not a masterpiece, of course.

The story begins just after the civil war. President Lincoln asks former opponents in the conflict to take charge together of cattle between Texas and Kansas, for helping people to survive, bringing them some food. A King Like Hardly Any King; A Man Like Hardly Any Man

June 1886, Munich...a new life in freedom has begun for a unique man...the streets of the city see mournful processions; flags, trumpets and bells proclaim the tragic death of the Bavarian king. The impressions among the audience are diverse...their dilemmas touch us: was he a great man 'too good for his times' or merely an eccentric not capable of ruling? A rose placed on his coffin by a beloved soul seems to whisper the story bringing us through a wonderful flashback to the heyday when everyone was so young, so joyful, so musical and the dream that night would shine one day seemed so promising...

The figure of Ludwig II together with his elaborate castles built in Bavaria is mostly associated with Luchino Visconti's 1972 masterpiece. And deservedly so because maestro's film develops the psyche of the 'fairy tale' king together with his motives for weird isolations and discoveries of his own sexuality. Thanks to its length, the use of details, music, contrasting images of white vs. black, of snow vs. darkness and the entire development of the mental states, Visconti's film remains unique and stays away from the traditional view of a feature film. Yet, fewer people know that a long time before 1972, this wondrous German film had been made, the film that still leaves a visual impression in the viewer. Although Kaeutner's film is made in the spirit of the post-war 'Heimatfilms,' the result has little to do with the saccharine sweetness that has, often undeservedly, been 'baptized' as 'kitsch.' This film still proves a certain variety of reasons why it is highly worth viewing.

The aspect that touches us most are the exquisite images, camera shots that leave more sensitive viewers breathless. Valuable cinematography by Douglas Slocombe and elaborate sets of authentic castles where the events actually took place, lavish wardrobe and bright colors make the film a visual feast. That aesthetic merit of the film is also beautifully executed in many romantic scenes that depict Ludwig's spirituality. There is also an excellent use of juxtaposing images that clearly portray the reality vs. fantasy - an aspect that played a decisive role in the king's life.

That aesthetic merit leads to the key quality of any movie...performances. O.W. Fischer, a renowned German actor of the time, does a terrific job combining a sympathetic personality with the eccentric mind, enthusiasm with isolation, link of an artist with the separation of the character. He appears to be at two levels here: as being himself, on his own and as a reflection of the love of his life - Empress Elizabeth widely known to viewers as Sissi (Ruth Leuwerik). To understand him, we are led to understand Sissi - from the very beginning, we are supplied with this perspective: two similar loving souls.

In their scenes, Ludwig's thoughts are manifested and Ludwig's feelings are conveyed. A must see is the scene at Schloss Berg, a very romantic one when they are together, their thoughts are mutual, their desires are similar and the two clouds in the sky occur to 'seal' their common mutual existence 'in Gedanken, in den Wolken' (in thoughts, in clouds). Another very symbolic scene is at the theater when they hold their hands. Of course, the performance of Ms Leuwerik is not comparable to Romy Schneider's portrayals of Sissi, but, actually, the actress offers us a very intelligent glimpse of the character - 'Kaiserin' as seen by Ludwig: through his perceptions, his dreams.

Mr Fischer as Ludwig alone gives an insightful performance. He is a man like hardly any man, a king like hardly any king who has no time for war...he wants to be alone...he loves nature...he adores beauty and art...he has his world, his passions and his idol (Richard Wagner portrayed by Paul Bildt). He is moody...he desires silence but, above all, he desires ULTIMATE FREEDOM. Insightful and psychologically claustrophobic as it may seem, the portrayal has certain limits, which makes watching the film a pleasure because the thoughts do not become too intense. We empathize with the king, we do our best to understand him and recognize something of ourselves in him. Helmut Kautner and O.W. Fischer seem to impose that limit not to make the portrayal unendurable. Another reason is the fact that difficult films were not so popular those days when the depressing images of WWII were still fresh in people.

Among the supporting cast, the actress that is a lovely discovery for me is Marianne Koch as Princess Sophie. Her portrayal shines with special charm, she is lovely as a young woman who loves Ludwig, who wants to marry him...yet, her mother's warning about true happiness in their family gives a new, unexpected standard. The turning point is the moment when she enters the theater with Ludwig and...they are alone...no audience whatsoever! The mesmerizing power that Ludwig captures while listening to Wagner's "Rheingold" occurs to be unendurable for the young princess. The music is so enchanting, so mysterious, so magical, such a blissful moment that seems to touch the very depths of human soul...yet, she cannot stand it. How memorably you can read the intense emotions from her face...tragic desire with tremendous fear. A lovely German actress whom I discovered so late thanks to my best friend.

Finally, a mention must be made of Wagner's music. Since the music had a lasting impact on the king throughout his life, we are supplied with the bits of these specific tunes that seem to touch us, overwhelm us, influence us...

13 June 1886...a new way began for the fairy tale king. No matter if we see it as an act of despair or a dream of utopia...he was a thought provoking figure. This movie is no masterpiece but an important German tribute to the unique personality. A pleasant, enjoyable aesthetic production.

The postman rings once!

Recently shown in all its sleazy glory on BBC 's British B season, this leans heavily on the Hollywood classic THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE - indeed Sandra Dore's character would aspire to the glamour of a Lana Turner. It follows the template of the hot sexy young wife using her hunky but dumb young stud to eliminate her inconvenient older husband but adds a few ingredients of its own. Marilyn tends be too whiny to be sympathetic and Maxwell Reed (a pin-up of his day) manages to convey the fall-guy mechanic's infatuation and confusion as his lover increasingly takes him for granted. The film throws in the added complication of the character of Rose who nurtures unrequited lesbian feelings for Marilyn but the actress's reading of her lines is monotonous and unfeeling - trying to be downtrodden, she merely comes across as vacuous and a bad actress. An unrecognisably young Ferdy Mayne crops up as a sleazy, flashy hustler who woos Marilyn with promises of the high life but skedaddles when she grows too serious. Best actor is Leslie Dwyer = Mr Partridge himself - as the cuckolded hubbie who comes to a predictable end. British B films ended to reflect the seedy down-at-heels side of England - mostly because they couldn't afford to gloss things up. In a way, they paved the way for the kitchen sink films of the late 5's- early 60's. However, they lacked actors who looked the part like Albert Finney and Tom Courtney. They had to settle for Maxwell Reed. Dwyer looks the part and inhabits his character more convincingly than the others.
