Review :

Alpine soldiers return home, face more conflict.

(Some spoilers) "Penne Nere" ("Black Feathers") is set in Italy during the last crucial two years of World War II, after the Badoglio government had signed an armistice with the allies. Throughout the nation the original Fascist army was disbanded and soldiers were pretty much on their own. Most tried to find their way back home and hope for the best, although with much of the nation now occupied by the Germans, the situation would be precarious.

Our hero, Pieri, is a young Alpine soldier (they wear black feathers in their caps.) He is from the village of Stella, where much of the story unfolds, and is in love with Gemma (Marina Vlady.) Having made their way back to their village over the Alpine snows after the news of the army disbandment, the soldiers, with the townspeople, become engaged in an effort to prevent the Germans from blowing up a dam.

At the end of the war, the two lovers are able to marry and we see the arrival of their first child. The movie is splendidly photographed and some of the shots of the Alps and the snows and the village environs are terrific. Marcello Mastroianni , appearing quite young here, cuts a handsome figure. His voice is dubbed, however, by someone else, always a common practice in Italy. Marina Vlady as his girl is very pretty and suitable to the part. Guido Celano plays Olinto, Pieri's brother who is killed in a German ambush. Young Enzo Staiola, famous as the boy in De Sica's "The Bicycle Thief" plays Olinto's son Tonino who smiles a lot and is given a substantial amount of screen time. The direction is by Oreste Biancoli, better known as a screenwriter.

Although the film does not have any reputation as a major work, it is still a very interesting one and does not disappoint at all.

Don't mess with Gene's horses ..........

In this later film from Gene's Columbia days, he does battle with ruffians diverting his much-needed horse supply. The action, script and casting here are quite good. Fans of less music/more action in their B-westerns should like this one.

Pat Butram provides several funny gags and both House Peters Sr AND Jr. appear in this one! The great Lyle Talbot is at his villainous best, (worst ?).

In many ways , this film was a departure from the song-filled light entertainment that Gene provided in the '40's. He did both well, but I feel this was one of the best of his later films ! Enjoy, pardners ...

Enjoyable fun

If you like good solid wacky comedy, this is a strong bet. An utterly silly movie, it makes me smile just thinking about it--I've seen it probably a dozen times. Cary Grant really was in a class by himself, managing to do virtually every genre, even though he seems to have been typecast by movie history--here he plays a hopelessly stuffy absent minded professor, after drinking a youth serum of improbable origin, he immediately becomes a teen ager from the early fifties. Changing on a dime, the transformation is hilarious.

Ginger Rogers, always really engaging, isn't give a lot to do as an adult, but she excels when regressing into a juvenile.

One thing--for anyone who really likes Marilyn Monroe (and who doesn't), this is a must see. Not because it's her best part, or because she has a lot of screen time, it isn't and she doesn't. But since she made this movie really before she became famous, it's instructive: the part is just another ditzy bombshell secretary, but something about her just jumps off the screen. This seems to me to be a great example of how there's an ineffable unexplainable quality of "screen presence". She manages to hold her own with Cary Grant, not an easy task for anyone, let alone some yet to be discovered starlet.

Now that we're in a gross out downward spiral for comedies, this might be the best tonic--a movie that's very silly, and very funny.

A fun film that does credit to the B category

Just saw this film for the first time since it's release in 1952. I was 10 years old then and quite enjoyed it. I must say that it has held up pretty well. No great entry in the Victorian, foggy street mystery genre, but it keeps ones interest throughout.

This movie, by the way, was shot in MGM's British studio and features a fine line up of English actors who turn in typically solid performances.

One more thing: this was by no means one of MGM's major productions for 1952. In fact, it pretty much qualifies as a B movie (except for running time); that is, a second, and cheaper, feature on a double bill. By 1952, the traditional B movie (as opposed to pictures that merely had lower budgets than the headlining A efforts) had just about disappeared. Soon, virtually all movies could be classed as A pictures, with the possible exception of the shoestring productions by little companies that often ended up at the local drive-in.

My point is this: studios such as MGM, when they consciously turned out the 60-65 minute movies that were shot in a couple of weeks at most, still maintained a fairly high standard of quality. One can think of the Val Lewton horror films at RKO-Radio Pictures or. . . well, or "The Hour of 13!"

Review :

A coming of age tale that is beyond charming

Three generations of French film charisma come together in this marvelous film about a family of French Canadians living in Ottawa (not Quebec!). Charles Boyer, in one of his earliest "character" roles after decades of being a leading-man lover, joins the up-and-coming Louis Jourdan and the old theatrical hand Marcel Dalio to make up the Bonnard family: Grandpere (Dalio) lives with Jacques (Boyer), his wife Susan (Hunt), and their son, Bibi (Driscoll). Jacques' bibulous, layabout brother Louis (Kasznar) lives across the street, with his shrewish, seamstress wife Felice and their possibly unmarriageable daughter. Desmonde, the third brother, is a traveling salesman with a rakish reputation--not unlike his father--who stays with Jacques' family when he's in Ottawa and who is a hero in the eyes of Bibi.

The story itself is small: Desmond comes to stay; Jacques, who plays violin and conducts the orchestra in a small burlesque and movie house, brings a sacked magician's assistant home to be the new maid; Louis storms out of his home and moves in on Jacques' porch; Grandpere falls ill; and Bibi deals with troubles at school and in the heart. But the writing and characterization are so true to life and moving that one gets utterly caught up.

The movie was based on a successful Broadway play (with Kasznar reprising his stage role, along with the young actress who plays girl-next-door Peggy), which in turn was based on a series of stories by Robert Fontaine about his own growing-up. The atmosphere is imbued with a certain French sophistication, but even more with the love and compassion all these members of the family have for each other. The conversation that the father, Jacques, has with his adolescent son, Bibi, as he tries to explain the tension between love and desire could be used successfully as a template for any such talk in any family on earth. But it is not just moving; much of the dialogue is as funny as in any family comedy you can think of.

I had never heard of this film, and only discovered it via Turner Classic Movies guest programmer. Sadly, it is not available in any video medium; I can't think of a better family film. If it comes around again on TCM, be sure to give it a try!

Culture Clash

This film has not been shown on TV in well over 20years and i don't think it has been released on TV.Alas it is not some forgotten masterpiece rather a dull comedy drama from Waling. The film is set in the period of the 1945-51 Labour government.Portman plays a trade union official who has been appointed High Commissioner above a career diplomat played by Cecil Parker and his snobbish wife played by Helen Cherry..The film revolves around culture clashes inside the embassy and in the dockyards. His daughter has to fight and ultimately quell a rebellion in the kitchen of the Consulate whilst Portman has to do likewise with the local populace who are led by Geoffrey Keen in dark make up.The film is extremely dated and reeks of comments on class relationships. It is difficult to know whom this film could appeal to and is evidence of the gradual decline in Ealing which would lead to its closure in 1955. Incidentally the locale looks like Gibraltar or Malta but it is in fact located in Sicily.Apparently Jill Cragie claimed that the BBFC decided that the film could not be set in those locations, which she says it was really about. No doubt bad for the image of Britain.

O'Moyne Family Values

Although the scenes showing the 26 year old Ann Blyth as a Catholic school girl were a bit awkward, on the whole Sally And Saint Anne is a tender and well done family picture about growing up Catholic during the Truman- Eisenhower era. I only wish that Blyth had been given a song or two for the film.

Blyth plays Sally O'Moyne youngest and only girl in the O'Moyne family a rather eccentric clan where the parents seem to indulge children. Parents are Otto Hulett and Frances Bavier and Ann's three older brothers are Hugh O'Brian, Jack Kelly, and Lamont Johnson. These kids are indulged like the inhabitants of Lionel Barrymore's place in You Can't Take I With You. Still they're a lovable crew. They have an enemy in their lives like the Vanderhoffs in the person of John McIntire who wants to acquire a piece of land that grandfather Edmund Gwenn owns and isn't above using the power of being an Alderman to do it.

One day in Catholic school in a bit of a rush Blyth says a quick prayer to the statue of St. Anne and gets her prayer answered in one of those mysterious ways God works. After that St. Anne becomes a personal spiritual lifeline she goes to and somehow things work out. That last thing which involves brother O'Brian is a pip.

Blyth is one of the group of actresses who are well known Catholic lay people and they also include Loretta Young, Rosalind Russell, and Irene Dunne. I'm sure this was a project from which she derived great satisfaction.

And while the view of the Roman Catholic Church has changed considerably since 1952, Sally And Saint Anne is still a nice family picture especially for Catholics.

Romance and adventure! In small amounts....

Occasionally charming foreign adventure/romance with Glenn Ford as a down-on-his-luck American returning to post-war France to retrieve the title treasure he found during the war and becoming entangled with cops, bad guys, and tour guide Geraldine Brooks. Lovely Brooks has a wonderful girl-next-door quality, but the 50s priggishness makes the romance tiresome at times.

The whole affair has a nice Hitchcockian feel, altho Hitch would never have been so priggish--with either with the sex or the violence. Director Rudolph Mate was the cinematographer for Hitch on Foreign Correspondent and other A-list directors in the 40s but had already directed several films himself by the time he did The Green Glove, including the classic DOA in 1950, with Edmund O'Brien.

Still, something is missing. Ford remains a cipher thruout; we don't get the feel of desperation that Hitch (or his leading men) was so good at conveying. Ford was a battle-hardened lieutenant in the war, yet it doesn't seem to help him much against the bad guys. Brooks is clingy, yet coy. A European dame, sexier and more independent, might have been a more interesting choice. (This is one of those stories where the leads have to pretend to be married at one point, thereby forcing them to be titillatingly intimate, right? Wrong: Mate blows it by having them demand separate rooms anyway!) The climax is good, if a bit predictable. But the exciting mountain chase down a goat trail feels a bit like a setting in search of a story, since we know from the opening scene that the story doesn't end there. Overall, it's a good A-picture adventure that could have benefited from a bit of B-picture sex and violence.

A bizarre oddity

This obscure British B-pic has to be seen to be believed. Ageing music hall entertainer Arthur Lucan ("Mother Riley") confronts a raddled and ill-looking Bela Lugosi, playing a master criminal who sleeps in his coffin and thinks he's a vampire. Lugosi, spoofing his own horror persona, is assisted by a sinister henchman called Hitchcock (!) and a silly-looking robot.

The film isn't particularly good but you keep on watching out of sheer bemusement, wondering what will crop up next. There's a song-and-dance routine in Old Mother Riley's shop, speeded-up chase sequences, a brief appearance from ex Will Hay "fat boy" Graham Moffat and, showing how social attitudes have changed, a running joke involving a drunk driver!

Scott's best prior to Budd Boetticher

1952 saw the Columbia release of one of Scott's best - Hangman's Knot.

They don't come much more taut than this, and its success only brings into question as to why director Roy Huggins never made another film as director. This one really begins to approach the later Boetticher films, being set in an isolated way station, as several of Budd's films happened to be, with Randy as a Confederate officer, who has stolen Union gold, not knowing the war is over.

Outlaws, learning of the loot, besiege the soldiers at the way station, but just as much danger comes from within - the menacing soldier played by Lee Marvin. The cast is better than those in the then most recent Scott vehicles, including Donna Reed, Claude Jarman, Jr., Richard Denning and Guinn "Big Boy Williams. Randy's son C.H. Scott, in the book "Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott" speaks fondly of Donna Reed, as if she was a second mother, and says that she and his father never lost touch over the years, and were devoted to each other.

Omitting the Boetticher films, this one is clearly the strongest Scott offering of the 1950s. That Huggins never directed a feature film again (he did direct a 1970 TV movie) is more our loss than his. Huggins did quite well in the long run, with items like Maverick, Rockford Files and The Fugitive in his future.

With much of the film set within the way station, Huggins manages to keep the tension high as Scott has to deal with the group of bounty hunters outside (led by Ray Teal in a rousing performance) and the wayward loose cannon Ralph, the Lee Marvin character. Lee must have impressed producer Scott as he got a much showier role in the first Scott-Boetticher classic SEVEN MEN FROM NOW. Meanwhile, Scott must serve as surrogate big brother of Claude Jarman Jr, no longer the little boy of THE YEARLING and in fact nearly as tall as the film's lead star.

Richard Denning also impresses in his part as Donna Reed's fiancée, a character as weak-willed as the fiancée in the later Boetticher film THE TALL T. At first willing to call attention to an attempted escape by Scott and company (despite giving his word otherwise), he later bargains to give them an alternate plan of escape - in exchange for two bars of the captured gold.

My favorite of Scott's 50's westerns prior to his Boetticher films and dollar for dollar, the equal of many much bigger budgeted items from the likes of Wayne and Cooper.

Review :

A truly wonderful film...one of the best!

From the opening scenes of Hunted, directly after the credits, when the dramatic music accompanies a little boy running through the streets of London clutching a teddy bear, we just know this is going to be a great film and it certainly is. Filmed in England and Scotland in late 1951 and released early in 1952, this truly is a wonderful film. The boy is six years old orphaned Scots boy Robbie Campbell (a truly outstanding debut performance by six years old Scots boy Jon Whiteley), who is running and searching for somewhere to hide after accidentally setting the kitchen curtains on fire in his adoptive London home and, believing he has set the house on fire, is fleeing the severe punishment that he believes will be meted out to him by his cruel and violent adoptive father. He ends up running into a derelict building on a bomb site some distance from home where he accidentally comes upon a man, Chris Lloyd (Dirk Bogarde), having just murdered his wife's lover in a crime of passion. Seeing that Robbie has seen the body and is the only witness to his crime, Chris abducts him and takes him on the run with him as he attempts to flee the country and the long arm of the law. Robbie, unloved at home and cruelly treated by his adoptive father, dare not return home and a bond develops between the two fugitives as Robbie flees his adoptive father and Chris flees the police and the hangman's rope.

Chris is at first completely uncaring and rough in his attitude to Robbie, but he gradually takes on the responsibility for Robbie's devotion as the two flee from London and travel up through the midlands to Stoke-on-Trent and then north into Scotland. As the journey gets tougher, Chris has to force Robbie to keep going, to carry him in his arms and to hold him, against the cold, as they sleep out in the wilderness.

It really is a superbly made drama and I read somewhere that, of all the many Rank films Dirk Bogarde made during his long career, this was his personal favourite. It is also a film record of a bygone post-war Britain; from its bomb sites and tramcars and horse drawn traffic in the capital, to the now long gone pottery factories of Stoke on Trent, belching forth their black smoke from huge bottle ovens and covered with industrial grime. The railway scenes in the film were filmed on the equally now long gone Potteries Loop Line at Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, one of hundreds of lines that fell under the Dr Beeching axe in the 1960's. All completely gone now, but captured for posterity on 35mm black and white film in Hunted.

The film is also a social record of the UK in 1951, a time of general poverty; of post-war austerity and ration books, when everybody dresses so drably. The police in the film may, by modern standards, seem to be having great difficulty in tracking down Chris and Robbie. But you have to take into account the fact that in those days, television was in its infancy; the police had no personal radio communications or computers or helicopters and the pace of life was very different. In real life 1951, a man on the run could quite easily abduct a little boy and take him all over the country with him without being apprehended. So this film then is a contemporary account of how things would have been back in 1951.

Today, in an increasingly paranoid age when, in the minds of many, man abducting little boy equals sex, this film is from a time when characters in films apparently didn't even think of such things. This mindset is no better demonstrated than by one of the police officials in the film who confesses to a colleague that he can't understand what Chris Lloyd wants with the boy. "Why does he hang on to him?" These days, the police would probably put two and two together and make five. However, the story is far more complicated than it would seem at first glance. For the film is not really as much about child abduction as it is about two people of very different ages teaming up in a common cause…neither of them can go home again and all they have is each other.

Early on in the film, before the loving relationship between Chris and Robbie develops, Chris says to the boy: "You don't like me, do you?" "No", says Robbie. "Well, why don't you go off home, then?" asks Chris. "I don't want to go home", answers Robbie...hence his decision to stay with Chris. As soon as Robbie gets over the initial shock of being dragged off by Chris at the beginning of the film, he comes to realise that from now on, his only future is with his co-fugitive.

At only six and a half years of age, Jon Whiteley is perfect for this film and comes across variously as scared; devious;furtive and, for a short time, happy to be with Chris and away from hisabusive home. His sheer delight at seeing men hay making in a field during the long journey north has to be seen to be believed. Dirk and Jon got on so well together that when the filming finished and they had to part, Jon was reportedly inconsolable. Dirk wanted to adopt the boy, but his friends persuaded him against it. The chemistry between Dirk and Jon is plain to see and what a team they make.

This film is an absolute classic. Beautifully acted; directed and photographed. One of the best British films of the 1950's. 10 out of 10 for this black and white gem.

Not bad

In 1950, American producer Robert Lippert formed a business alliance with Hammer studios. Under the agreement, Lippert would provide American acting talent - frequently shop-worn stars or just supporting actors who fancied a profitable trip out of the country - while Hammer would supply the rest of the cast and the production facilities. Together they would split the profits. Famous for his concern with the bottom line, Lippert produced over 140 films between 1946 and 1955, characteristically genre pieces such as I Shot Jesse James or Rocketship XM. For the British deal, most of the films were noir-ish thrillers - and include this title.

Stolen Face (1952) offers the characteristic noir idea of loss, or confusion, of identity often through surgery, as seen in the plots of such titles as Dark Passage (1947), or Hollow Triumph (1958). In the present film, which has echoes of both Pygmalion and Vertigo, a plastic surgeon falls in love with a concert pianist during a vacation, thinks he has lost her to another man, and sets to copy her features when restoring the looks of another woman - incidentally a habitual criminal

  • whom he thereupon marries. If this sounds far fetched, then it is,

but is carried of well enough by the two leads Paul Henreid and Lizabeth Scott, who between them produce sympathetic moments enough during early scenes that almost makes one forget limitations elsewhere. Another standout element of this film is the musical score by the late Malcom Arnold. There is also an interestingly ambiguous ending.

Rupert Murdoch, are you out there?

I saw this movie once, only once. I was in Junior High School, some 45 years or so ago. For the longest time, I could not remember the title, but found it in the IMDb listings. As far as myself or my other movie buff friends know, this has not been aired since that era.

Yet, it still brings forth vivid memories of a great story, a strong cast giving a fine performance in a truly tense and thrilling crime nail biter. So why is it absent from the television/video scene?

In the credits, it is listed as a 20th Century-Fox film. That means that it is now property of News Corporation, Ruppert Murdoch's conglomerate. It is just sitting in a vault collecting dust and going undiscovered by a whole new generation of film devotees.

Mr. Rupert Murdoch, are you reading this? Come on, get with it man!! Get this gem out of hiding and on TV, VHS and DVD. C'mon, Rup! Share the Wealth, already! already!!

UPDATE: Dateline, Chicago, January 3, 2012. After at least 50 years, we just viewed the picture on Turner Classic Movies. It was not as good as we remembered it as a 12 year old in the 7th grade; it is even better. Probably just a case of understanding "adult situations" much better.

Incidentally, we owe Mr. Rupert Murdoch an apology; for while it was originally a 20th Century-Fox release (since then having become part of Murdoch's News Corporation conglomerate), it was an independent production; now being distributed to television by Warner Brothers.

RUBY - A FLAWED GEM

Jennifer Jones certainly did not get type cast in her screen roles. As a complete contrast to her normal saintly image (Duel in the Sun excepted) she plays Ruby Gentry,a Sth.Carolina girl from the wrong side of the tracks who gets emotionally involved with Boake Tackman (Chalton Heston) her sometime aristocratic boyfriend who is promised (more as a property contract) to Tracy who comes from another good Sth.Carolina family.Ruby has a religous zealot brother who constantly harps on about "doom and gloom" if his sister carry's on her liaison with Boake. When Ruby realises she will not become Mrs Tackman she agrees to marry Jim Gentry -a working class local boy made good, played by Karl Malden, (funny how he always looks the same age in all his films no matter when they were filmed!).After a boating accident Jim dies and Ruby "cops the lot" arousing suspicion in the local town folk who knew Jim Gentry. There is nothing more scary than a woman scorned and when Boke rejects Ruby's last offer of money for marriage, she goes ballistic and purposely ruins his carefully cultivated fields he has reclaimed at great expense from nature but I will not divulge the ending. The poor old doctor does not press his suite enough but Ruby does not fancy him anyway. An interesting new role for JJ who certainly looks "the biz" in her tight fitting jeans!

Review :

Old-fashioned but still enjoyable

Violeta, a gipsy girl, reads Eugenia de Montijo's hand and foretells that she will become an empress. When Eugenia marries Napoleon she calls the girl to the court. Both in Granada and in Paris, Violeta must suffer the attentions of Juan (Eugenia's cousin) who has fallen in love with her and wants to set her up as his mistress. The movie is a musical and Carmen Sevilla has a beautiful voice. I only wish something have been done about the male singer; his voice grates on my nerves.
