Classic French crime movie from the 1950s. An influence on everyone from Godard and Truffaut to Paul Thomas Anderson.

Cult director Jean-Pierre Melville was originally involved with French art legend Jean Cocteau, but really found his niche making hard boiled crime movies. 'Bob le flambeur' was the first major work by him, and he kept making movies up until the early 1970s with 'Dirty Money'. His work had a huge influence on the French New Wave led Godard and Truffaut (who cast him in a supporting role in 'Breathless' as an acknowledgment), and has proved to be a major inspiration for American film makers like Scorsese, Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson whose debut 'Hard Eight' owes 'Bob le flambeur' quite a debt. 'Bob..' really knocked me out, and along with the equally brilliant 'Rififi' directed by Jules Dassin and released the same year, it's one of THE great crime movies of the 1950s, and should be mentioned in the same breath as Huston's 'The Asphalt Jungle' and Kubrick's 'The Killing'. All four films have had an enormous influence on most subsequent movies in the heist genre. 'Bob's plot is quite simple but the story itself isn't the half of it. What Melville DOESN'T say is just as important as what he does, and the viewer has to piece a lot of it together for himself. Roger Duchesne is super cool as Bob, the ageing gambler on a perpetual bad streak, Daniel Cauchy is excellent as his cocky young protege Paolo, and Isabelle Corey is sexy and intriguing as Anne, the jailbait who gets involved with them both. Personally I prefer this movie and 'Rififi' to 'Breathless' and any French New Wave I've seen to date, but that says as much about my taste as much as the movies themselves. Even so I highly recommend 'Bob le flambeur' to anybody who involves crime movies. It's a classic of the genre, and still fantastically entertaining.

Rex Allen comes to California as a wagon train guide during the period of the great Spanish ranchos and finds his old buddy Slim, from when they were U. S. No Phantoms, but live action

There are no phantoms in Phantom Stallion among the humans or the equines. But this is a pretty good Rex Allen western which finds Rex going to old Mexico to visit his old army pal Slim Pickens who is the foreman of a ranch that Harry Shannon owns.

Harry has a brogue in this one to rival Barry Fitzgerald. He married a Mexican woman and his niece by marriage Carla Balenda is his heir. He also has an adopted minor child Peter Price who is the son of his housekeeper Rosa Turich. If this were not a western that was aimed at a juvenile audience, the script would have been more frank about Price's origins.

In any event Balenda and boyfriend Don Haggerty who is the foreman have been stealing horses and selling them and blaming the loss on a wild stallion. Then they try murder and succeed in blaming the stallion for killing Shannon. Of course Rex and Slim get to the bottom of everything in the fashion of the B westerns of the time.

The B western was winding down at this time, something that Herbert J. Yates of Republic did not foresee. Items like Phantom Stallion were being done on television now and Rex Allen was the last of Yates's stable of cowboy stars and in a year he would leave the studio also.

Still the stories and the productions of these were at their best at the end and Phantom Stallion is a good film with no phantoms, but lots of live action.

masterpiece of the fantastic

_Sadko_ is a masterpiece of cinematic fantasy - there doesn't seem to be one frame that doesn't enthral, and the recreations of medieval Ukraine and India are unsurpassed by any other historical/fantasy film. The dubbed American version, _The Magic Voyage of Sinbad_, is a bit of a travesty, but I recently saw the complete Russian version with subtitles at a Ptushko retrospective which was going around the country, so it may soon be possible to finally get the real thing on video.

I Love Lucy in Arabia!

I had taped this movie off of TCM, and was really enjoying it when my tape ran out halfway through! But the part that I saw was very funny, thanks to the actress playing Susie, who I'd never seen before. I started watching assuming this was going to be a typical corny 1950s Arabian adventure movie, but when Susie started cracking wise with her man-hungry and self-depreciating comments it was a delightful surprise! It was like an episode of "I Love Lucy" in Arabia, as Susie was chased by the villains, danced hilariously with the harem girls, and hid in giant vases and under beds, while helping the princess and her loyal supporters reclaim the throne.

I hope I'll be able to see the entire movie sometime, and others by this hilarious actress!

Ahead Of Its Time

Cary Scott (Jane Wyman) is a middle-aged, wealthy woman whose husband recently died. Ron Kirby (Rock Hudson) is Cary's younger, independent-minded landscape gardener. Ron reads Thoreau, respects nature, and values simplicity and honesty. Cary and Ron are attracted to each other. For Ron, marriage to Cary is an easy decision. But for Cary, the decision to marry Ron is harder. She must confront the disapproval of her grown children, and the disapproval of friends whose materialistic, country club values are inconsistent with the values of Thoreau.

In a town where people know each other's business, tongues wag. Feelings get hurt. Conflict erupts. The film's subdued lighting and vivid colors, combined with soft piano and velvety violin background music, create a tone that is sad and sentimental. Viewers are right to say that this Douglas Sirk directed film is a melodramatic soap opera.

Thinly veiled behind the simple plot, however, lies a profound message: "to thine own self be true". It is a message totally out of sync with 1950's America. Yet, the message would surface a decade later as the 1960's youth mantra: "do your own thing".

As an archetype, Ron seems too pure. And Cary's children and friends, shallow, selfish, vain, gossipy, and judgmental, are easy to dislike. This sharp dichotomy is somewhat unrealistic. But it gets the point across. And that point is a blistering indictment of 1950's American materialism and mindless conformity.

The film was thus ahead of its time. Despite its high technical quality, it was snubbed by the Oscars. In retrospect, "All That Heaven Allows" is superior to all five of the Oscar best picture nominees from that year. And its message is just as relevant now as it was fifty years ago.

Yet More Stock Footage with a Little Jim Thrown In

Jungle Man-Eaters (1954)

This was the thirteenth and final film in the Jungle Jim series, although three more films would follow but the Jungle Jim name would be dropped. This time out Jim (Johnny Weissmuller) must try and locate some diamond smugglers who are using an evil jungle tribe to scare off the good tribes in the jungle. Soon Jim is fighting men, lions, crocs and various other beasts while trying to impress a girl (Karin Booth). Like so many of these old series, I'm having to watch this one out of order but I've seen enough to realize all the negative things I've heard are pretty much try. It's rather amazing to see how much stock footage and cheese is throughout this thing and I really have to wonder if the studio checked to see how much stock footage they had and then just built a story around it. As bad as this film is I can't help but almost recommend it simply due to its campy nature and at times god-awful acting. God bless Weissmuller but it's clear he wasn't any type of actor outside the Tarzan image. His line delivery here is pretty bad but then again I'll give him credit because it's actually better than some of the earlier films in the series. He was also getting up their in age and there are times where it seems like he's in pain trying to (slowly) run yet we're suppose to believe he has the strength to fight a wild lion or a crocodile. Speaking of the lion scene, we're treated to quite a bit of stock footage including some with the lion fighting a bull and getting knocked around pretty badly. This is some rather interesting footage and I'm sure it's not going to sit well with some viewers. When Jim finally gets to fight this same lion thankfully he's turned into a fake rug by then. Supporting players Booth, Richard Wyler and Bernie Hamilton aren't much better as they zip in and out of stock footage and poorly added scenes trying to fit in with it. Just check out the sequence where one of the villages are burned and we see footage of various animals trying to escape the smoke. The fake smoke added to the stock footage just shows how cheap this movie and series was. Again, this is an incredibly poorly made film but it remains mildly charming simply because of the camp value. This is third-rate material all the way but producer Sam Katzman probably laughed his way to the bank.
