Patsy is a well-behaved little girl whose only real problem is a school bully, also one of the orphans, who spreads stories that she set their orphanage on fire. Problems arise when the local newspaper goes after Patrick, the town reeve and prominent member of his political party. Patrick decides they can't go forward with the adoption. Patsy overhears him and runs away but does so just as the school catches fire. The community quickly decides Patsy is responsible but it's Patrick who comes to her defense. It all ends well.

Garson cause film ?

Garson/Pidgeon made a film in 1941 called "Blossoms in the Dust," about Edna Gladney, who was a social worker who championed "baby rights." Principally, that film is about stopping the use of the word "illegitimate" on a baby's birth certificate, which cruelly branded a person for life.

This film deals with religious bigotry, and does so effectively. Both films demonstrate that when people take a respectful, but firm stand for something, they can achieve a worthy result. It is a moral picture as one has mentioned, and is well done. People have paid a price to effect vital change. That's a worthy theme.

I have wondered in each case, whether Greer Garson had an interest in the cause. She would have had more choices of films during these periods, I would think. In any event, as usual, she did a good job.

The only time I thought she was actually bad in something (a couple of her films themselves were weak) was in her depiction of Eleanor Roosevelt in "Sunrise at Campobello" with Ralph Bellamy as FDR. The accent and manner were pretty awful -- no, really awful.

But this is a good film. TCM shows it fairly regularly, as part of a Walter Pidgeon birthday salute or for Greer Garson, etc.

well worth a watch

Martha is a dress designer who is longing for her big break, and finally gets it when she manages to convince her boss (whose designs are stuck in the past) that she needs a holiday. Alison, who is fresh out of school, assists Martha in getting the new company off the ground. The movie starts in 1938 and follows the course of the two girls and their careers over a period of about ten years. A smattering of comedy, a little romance, overall this is a fine drama. Half of it is set on the catwalk, and there are plenty of gorgeous outfits to look at, stylish even fifty years later.

There are some disadvantages to being a man of intellect.

After the FBI, the Post Office, and the NYPD, we travel north of the border to Montreal; where a police inspector (Edward G. Robinson) is suspicious about several deaths and a possible attempt to kidnap a nuclear physicist.

George Raft is the mobster doing a job for unknown masters to get money and back into the US. Audrey Totter is tapped to seduce the scientist to make the job easier.

Calling this noir is really stretching it. It doesn't have any of the dark seediness that one expects. It's more a straight police procedural.

Trotter is the most interesting character in the film. The rest just seem as if they are collecting paychecks.

a very rare,hard to find,nostalgic ,light hearted,science fiction comedy/drama from a gone era

this rare hard to find film should appeal to those science fiction collectors that like a nostalgic typical "greed verses good" message, the cast should be very impressive to veteran fans of 1950"s classic science fiction,check out those names folks!, modern present day corrupt politicians would not approve of this film,the stereotypes are in our newspapers and on television everyday at the present time,****my favorite line from the film is when the orphan boy asks the judge, "what is a birthday card?",**** i sincerely hope someday the distributors will release a quality print of this almost forgotten film, but my gut feeling is that will not happen due to current marketing practices. in my humble opinion,this is an interesting study of a 1954 moralistic science fiction comedy/drama very similar to some episodes of the latter excellent twilight zone television series.

Originally released in 3-D, the film covers the post-Revolutionary War of Dr. Carlos Morales, the son of an indentured servant, who has been raised and educated by General Darby, and made legal executor of the Georgia estate when Darby dies. He is opposed by Nancy Darby who tries to break the will and also her father's desire to set up a group of free medical clinics for the poor to be overseen by Carlos. The true culprits behind her opposition are her fiancé, Harvey Bristol and his father, Dr. Bristol, who are in reality preying on the Darby holdings. A plague that hits Savannah is thrown in the mix.

Sangaree

Wow, finally got my DVD copy of "Sangaree" just recently, and this is a top notch movie for it's time.....Fernando Lamas with the Ricky Ricardo accent, his voice and Desi Arnaz almost sounds exactly the same......story concerns the old south and Lamas being awarded the rights to a plantation and all of its wealth by a dying patriarch...... The family of two beautiful women, Arlene Dahl and Patricia Medina and Tom Drake (of "Meet me in St Louis" fame).....take no particular stance against Lamas, but a con artist doctor and his son do and challenge the will in court....Lamas prevails, but has to fight tyranny in old Savannah trying to protect the vast Darby empire from pirates and the plague.....con artist doctor Bristol tries to hide his warehouse from the public because it contains stolen contraband and is a haven for infested rats. Lamas organizes the town citizens and exposes corruption in old Savannah.......in the end he winds up with Nancy Darby, played by Arlene Dahl....for my money I would have taken the lovely Patricia Medina as a love interest...she was a staple in 50s costume dramas and as beautiful as they come. Have to wonder why this film was never released to video by Paramount....a top notch cast and a very good story. This is just one of lots of classics that have never gotten past the courts or whatever and been released to video....why??? It took over twenty years of legal wrangling before "The High and the Mighty" with John Wayne was released also. If you like good 50s costume dramas you will love "Sangaree"......

Last and best MGM teaming of Esther Williams and Van Johnson

Although critics constantly gripe that Esher Williams could not act this movie lore is absolutely nonsense. Most of her films were slight escapist fare that called for her to display her sparkling light comedic touch which she showed over and over in hit after hit throughout the forties and fifties. WHen allowed to play more dramatic roles like "Million Dollar Mermaid"(MGM,1952) and most superbly in the underrated "The Unguarded Moment"(Universal,1956) she was very fine indeed but the rumor persists. But I will say it is in delightful musical confections like "Easy TO Love"(MGM, 1953) that she remained a top box-office star. Her chemistry with Van Johnson was always there. This was their fifth film together: their first was in Victor Fleming's dramatic fantasy "A Guy Named Joe"(MGM,1943) in support of superstars Spencer Tracey and Irene Dunne but this film made both stars; the empty but hugely successful "Thrill of a Romance"(MGM, 1945); certainly holding their own opposite the marvelous Lucille Ball in the charming and extremely popular "Easy to Wed"(MGM, 1946); and finally the solid hit "Duchess of Idaho"(MGM,1950) which allows Esther and Van to sparkle. But it is their last film "Easy to Love" that captures Esther and Van at their most captivating. The story is the usual fluff about fighting ex-lovers and is topped off with spectacular Busby Berkeley production numbers but all this is wrapped up in a witty script and the superb comic performances of Miss Williams and Mr. Johnson who were never better. Sad to say both their careers declined after this success.

Horizons West is directed by Budd Boetticher with a story written by Louis Stevens. It stars Robert Ryan, Rock Hudson, Julia Adams, John McIntire, Raymond Burr & Dennis Weaver. It's a Technicolor production with Charles P. Boyle on photography.

It's the end of the Civil War and the Hammond brothers Neal (Hudson) and Dan (Ryan) return to the family ranch in Texas. Neal is happy to graft away on the ranch but Dan wants considerably more. But Dan's plans are altered after an encounter with Cord Hardin (Burr), an encounter that sees Dan switch to the wrong side of the law. A switch that drives a wedge thru the Hammond family, particularly since Neal has decided to don a badge and become a Marshal of Austin.

Interesting and watchable early Western effort from Budd Boetticher. It has some psychological aspects that mark it out as being above average. Themes of greed and family strife are of course nothing new in the grand scheme of the Western movie, but Boetticher and his cast knit them together here with some conviction, notably Ryan who was in the middle of a great run of movies that included On Dangerous Ground, Beware, My Lovely and The Naked Spur. There's no real complexities to the characters, but they are well formed, and the finale has the courage of its convictions. There's also some very neat period costuming from Rosemary Odell, with the quite ravishing Adams benefiting greatly there. The main problematic issues outside of some narrative familiarity come with being asked to believe that Ryan and Hudson (whose limp) are brothers, and that McIntire is Ryan's father (there's only two years between them in reality). Whilst there's sadly a lack of impacting outdoor photography; even if that's off set a touch by the easy on the eye set designs for the town by Russell A. Gausman & Joseph Kish.

A more than adequate time filler for the discerning Western fan. 6/10
