Review :

Not a bad yarn

Perhaps one of the most effective Edward L Cahn movies ever made. A woman's prison tale. One more. I was afraid it would be a sort of Poor Man - or Woman's - CAGED or WOMEN'S PRISON. Of course, it's a B movie. But pretty well done. Characters are described in the right manner. The movie talks about life conditions in jail for women, cruelty exerted by ward sisters on the inmates. Solitary cells, for instance. A social drama film noir. Not bad for Edward L Cahn. It proves that our sweet Eddie could do very good things when he wanted to, and when he could, when he had producers to let him do what he wished to do.

The film is fast paced, with some sequences we usually find in greater productions. And the music score is also adequate to the rhythm of the feature.

In short, a film noir that deserves to be seen.

Review :

Unusual, well written, acted and produced love/war movie.

This is a Rank Company (British) medium budget production of a post war H. E. Bates novel. Well directed by Robert Parrish, the screen writing by Eric Ambler is quite good. It was shot on site in, what was then, Ceylon. (Same location as "Bridge on the River Kwai")

The young Gregory Peck plays Bill Forrester a Canadian pilot in the RAF serving in far off Burma in the closing months of WWII. He flies a two seat Mosquito fighter-bomber. (The actual aircraft was provided through the cooperation of the RAF and repainted in accurate camouflage and markings, for once.) Forrester, it seems, has gone "round the bend" after losing his new wife in the Blitz. He's self destructive, wanting to end it all in combat. "You'd think that would be easy in a war", he explains to Anna, "but I just kept getting medals instead." Anna is a small, slim, pretty teacher, played very well by Win Min Than, a Burmese actress (how refreshing). They, of course, fall in love (It's a MOVIE, folks) and his life really seems to be turning around. But, on a routine flight, he and two others go down in a very remote desert area of Burma's central plain (hence, the title). From there on we have a rather good, believable survival saga.

The English love eccentric characters and this story has several, all well depicted by some of those fine performers who bounce back and forth between the British "legitimate" stage and cinema. Watch for Brenda De Banzie, who plays Miss McNab, an elderly missionary. (Ya couldn't miss her!)

The Purple Plain is a good movie, a fine movie really. Not too heavy, it's historically accurate with good production values. Forrester's growth curve coming out of his personal hell is quite interesting. I found the depiction of the native Burmese was respectful without being condescending. For instance, the love between Bill and Anna is portrayed in a very reserved manner, as it would be between a Westerner and a Christian Asian woman in real life. All in all, the story line and performances are very believable and very enjoyable. I highly recommended The Purple Plain, if YOU can find it.

Conflict also arises when one of his fellow scientists, taking advantage of Heathley's lack of attention toward his wife, Lydia (Phyllis Calvert), makes some moves on her. Review :

A fun mystery with supersonic action

The Net is a fun mystery story, surrounding the battle amongst a group of scientists for control of M7, a supersonic plane which aims to help man into space.

As the battle for control of the project rages, the film creates some love interest, as Phyllis Calvert struggles to maintain her loyalty to her obsessed scientist husband.

But the highlight of this film must be the special effects and sound of the supersonic aircraft. They look a bit lame now, but in the 1950's this would have been one of the ultimate hi-tech films.

Review :

Subpar noir

George Raft finished a series of pictures he made with anemic budget Lippert Studios with The Man From Cairo. And in the tradition of B movies the title has nothing to do with the film other than Raft changes planes in Cairo.

Where he meets up with an old friend Richard McNamara, an American private detective who has been hired by the French government to locate some French gold that disappeared into the Algerian desert after the Nazis invaded. The bad guys mistake Raft for McNamara after Raft arrives in Algiers and the action begins.

Other than a quick appearance by Greek actress Irene Papas who gets killed off right away, no other players of note to Americans are cast in this film. The Man From Cairo is slightly better than Raft's Outpost In Morocco with the action taking place in the same locale, but not much better.

No one has ever accused George Raft of being a great actor, but he truly is lifeless in this film. I'm sure he was grateful for the paycheck and that's about it.

One definitely for the money.

Interesting and Enjoyable

This movie is "On the Town" meets "American in Paris", but it is unique and highly entertaining. It is the only true musical which features Tony Curtis. (Sure, "Some Like It Hot" is sort of a musical, but Marilyn Monroe handles all of the musical numbers.) Curtis sings and dances and doesn't do a bad job at it. He is competing with Gene Nelson, one of the finest film dancers. Curtis keeps up nicely with Nelson and although his singing isn't spectacular, he does sing in tune. Also appearing in this film is the underrated comedian Paul Gilbert. In the 1950s, Gilbert appeared in three musicals: this one, plus "The Second Greatest Sex" and "You Can't Run Away from It". Gilbert has a nice feel for delivering punch lines and handles physical comedy like a champ. It is a shame that examples of his work are so few. The songs were written by the totally unknown team of Moody and Sherrill. They also wrote songs for Gilbert's "The Second Greatest Sex" and "Fresh from Paris". This is all that is known about them. The songs are melodic and catchy. It is not Sondheim, but it is not meant to be. The musical arrangements are by Henry Mancini; it is early in Mancini's career and he still has not found his trademark French horn and strings combination. He is still writing in a big band style. This film is fast, light and fun, and movie musical fans looking for some good, obscure songs will be delighted with it.

The Quest For Joseph

Eleanor Parker has come to Egypt at the turn of the last century to seek the help of two fisted archaeologist Robert Taylor. Given this man's readiness to duke it out with friend or foe, he might well have been Sean Connery's father and Harrison Ford's grandfather. Maybe on Sean's mother's side accounting for the name change.

Parker's mission is to prove a theory of her late father that there is some archaeological proof of the biblical story of Joseph and they've identified a Pharaoh who might have been the one in charge at the time Joseph was doing his prognosticating from his dreams. She convinces Taylor and her husband Carlos Thompson to go to the Valley Of The Kings and seek the proof.

Our archaeologists run into a lot of opposition from Tuareg leader Victor Jory, antiquities dealer Kurt Kaszner, and even from Thompson who's in it for whatever loot he can acquire and smuggle. One of the plot weaknesses is that Thompson's villainy is revealed too early. Let's a lot of the suspense out of Valley Of The Kings.

Valley Of The Kings is a gorgeously photographed film on location in Egypt in the real Valley Of The Kings. Taylor and Parker were in their second of three films they made together and they were an item while Taylor was in between marriages to Barbara Stanwyck and Ursula Thiess. The attraction is quite obvious.

There is also a wonderfully staged climatic fight on top of one of the tombs between Taylor and Thompson. Valley Of The Kings is an entertaining enough film, that could have used a better written story for its cast of talented players.

Gibson Pardee, U.S.N.R. the Port Warden of Los Angeles harbor, runs his office with an iron hand and is unbending under his responsibilities. Marshall Walker, his close ex-Navy friend and assistant, confined to a wheel chair, is happy with his wife Kay and their two small children. As the two had always feared, they learn that a freighter that just docked has an atomic bomb aboard. The ship captain, Snyder, tells them that the bomb may be set off anytime within the next 12 hours by a Communist "detonating" ship hovering somewhere off shore. To prevent panic, Gibson and Walker get Gibson's enemy, tugboat captain Stanley Povich, to agree to tow the bomb-ship to sea in a race against time.

This movie is so bad that it is great!

This movie is my favorite bad movie. It is based on the premise that Russia would select the port of San Pedro California as a key target to attack with an Atomic bomb hidden aboard a tanker. The captain, a spy, uses a pay phone within hearing distance of the port warden who over hears the plan to leave a falsely quarantined freighter in the harbor with an Atom bomb timed to explode. The port warden has to find a tug to pull the tanker out to sea. Evidently he doesn't have access to one only being the port warden. The only one he can think of belongs to a rival, the brother of his girl friend. He takes a taxi (they show this) to her home where where walks up to the house, confronts her brother, they brawl, but he obtains access to the tug. Then to man the helm he needs someone. He selects the office manager who is crippled and in a wheel chair. He has to be helped aboard the tug. Predictably, the they pull the tanker out to sea, the bomb does explode, and it's labeled a mystery in the newspaper. This terrible flick doesn't seem to appear on TV any more. It's a shame since it is so bad it is great to watch!
