This film is available (legally) on DVD in Australia in a two-movie pack with another Jack Hawkins film "The Seekers" (a.k.a. "Land of Fury" in the States). You can order it from www.ebay.com.au (for only ten Australian dollars!!!). Is also advertised on www.ebay.com in the States from another Australian source.

"The Seekers" is an important film historically in New Zealand where I live, because it's the first colour feature filmed here and features several prominent indigenous Maori actors including acclaimed opera singer Inia te Wiata who went on to perform at Covent Garden in London.

Other major international productions filmed or set in New Zealand in this period include "Green Dolphin Street" (director Victor Saville, 1947; starring Lana Turner and Van Heflin) about an Englishman thwarted in love who seeks redemption in exile in New Zealand, which won an Oscar for Best Special Effects for its earthquake scenes; "Until They Sail" (director Robert Wise, 1957; starring Paul Newman, Jean Simmons, Joan Fontaine, Sandra Dee and Piper Laurie) about GIs romancing New Zealand girls during the war; and "Two Loves" (director Charles Walters, 1961; starring Jack Hawkins again, Shirley MacLaine and Laurence Harvey) in which Shirley Maclaine is an idealistic young American immigrant school teacher amongst the impoverished Maoris battling (and in love with) the cynical Harvey and the set-in-his ways school inspector Hawkins. All the Maori roles seem to be played by Asians or Mexicans. This is also the case on "Green Dolphin Street" where all the Maoris seem to be played by Mexicans (apparently that one was filmed on a Hollywood lot).

Light-hearted pirate adventure is entertaining...

The light-hearted nature of this pirate adventure is immediately evident as the film opens with Barbarosa (Payne) being discovered romancing some harem ladies whereupon he's furiously chased by soldiers. He manages to reach the seacoast and swims out to the nearest ship. This is the best part of the film as he surreptitiously climbs aboard and rather than becoming a galley slave, he persuades the crew to mutiny and then to piracy with him as their chief!

From then on it's pretty standard pirate movie fare. Henry Brandon and Gerald Mohr are surprisingly effective as wealthy but dishonest Spanish schemers, but their modern haircuts don't go very well with their elaborate 17th century court costumes. Donna Reed looks good, but is not convincing as the haughty daughter of a Spanish governor. The film comes alive only when John Payne is on screen, but nevertheless manages to entertain.

Tails You Lose

This is a series of stories of four women who own, in succession, a Parisian evening gown. As such, it might be considered a female version of Duvivier's TALES OF MANHATTAN. The difference seems to be that in the other movie, the clothes in question -- a set of men's evening clothes -- is largely a linking device; and to a man, one set of evening clothes is pretty much like another: if they fit and they're not disreputable-looking (as they gradually become in the course of the movie), they are, basically, interchangeable. Not so for a woman's evening gown!

Because of that structural issue and because this is a woman's picture it is somewhat less interesting to me. Nonetheless, the talent here is always competent, the lines are frequently interesting -- Tom Conway, as a Maharajah, is offered a succession of haute cuisine dishes but prefers simple fare -- and the result is highly watchable.

this film is amazing!

I find his interpretation of the young "romano" who wants to be "americano" fantastic, and although I did not like Alberto Sordi when I first came to Italy (1970) I realize I did not understand the humor or the culture, but since then I have seen many of his films , and this remains one of my favourites. It is lively, funny, relaxing, and also shows how the "americanisation" has really come about (cereals for breakfast, fast food, cars, blue jeans) which were a joke then, are everyday reality today) However one thing has however survived, the love for spaghetti by the Italians, in fact one of the scenes I prefer is when Alberto decides to destroy his huge plate of spaghetti, as I like to destroy them in the same way. It is a film that can be seen over and over again . If you want to learn more about the Italians from the "inside" Alberto sordi is the actor to follow in the last 50 years

Neato little oddball science fiction thriller

Though I was never that good at physics, or indeed any science, my passable knowledge of the workings of energy, atoms and whatnot suggests to me that the premise of this film is completely crazy. Though I guess at the time it might well have passed as an authentic speculative piece of hard science fiction nowadays there is little doubt that it will never be possible to create a deadly rogue radioactive element that can increase itself in size every twelve hours and cause powerful magnetic disruption. I distrust scientific experiments as much as the next chump but I don't think the eggheads could pull something like this off, even by accident. Fortunately this film has taut direction from Curt Siodmak and a fun script by Ivan Tors, full of techno babble and weird shenanigans to keep the film from ever becoming distracting in its implausibility. Quite on the contrary there is a sense of verve and commitment to the film that makes it a whole lot of gripping fun, which is especially remarkable given that the enemy is essentially a rock and the film has little more than stock footage, magnetised objects moving around and some other cheap effects to represent the menace. The cast works nicely, with Richard Carlson and King Donovan good value if unspectacular as the heroes, and Leonard Mudie gives an interesting performance as the ill fated creator of the deadly element. The film does slacken a touch in the mid section, as the lack of destructive effects combined with the fact that the enemy is just, well, an inanimate object causes a slowdown in the tension, but the film comes right back up to a good speed with a finale that uses a good deal of footage from the German film Gold. Not having seen that film I can't tell what exactly was taken from it but the footage is very well edited in and I hardly noticed any difference. All in all this is good offbeat stuff, with some good lines and an endearingly nutty sense of humour, for example, the computer that the heroes use goes under the acronym MANIAC. Worth a watch for old school science fiction buffs I'd say.

Love this Film

This film means a lot to me and my family. Duncan MacRae (Grandaddie) is a relative on my mother's side. It is lovely to hear these nice comments about this film from people as I think it is a great film. The two wee boys are such fantastic actors and make the film what it is. I have a cousin who was the spitting image of Davy. We used to make him run around yelling 'Don't eat the babbie, Grandaddie!'

I am still trying to find it on DVD/Video for my grandmother as we only have an old copy that was recorded off the telly. So if anyone can tell me where I could get a hold of an official copy of it that would be great.

Bad accents, but great flick

To my mind, this is the best knights of olde movie ever made. Years ago it was the habit of British tv station BBC2 to have a movie on at 6pm most evenings and they were usually, either 40 & 50's westerns, historical yarns, melodramas or swashbucklers. One such film was The Black Shield of Falworth, I was a big fan of such films like The Vikings (Incidentally or co-incidentally both starred Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh) and decided to record this movie, if it was any good I'd keep it, but if not just tape over the damn thing. The movie was that good I still have it after 15/16 years. The plot is similar to Henty's Novel 'St George for England' in as much as it tells the story of a peasant boy ignorant of his noble blood for most of his upbringing. though that's where the similarities end. The American accents in a film set in medieval England are ludricrous, but the plot of the film is so engaging that you don't mind as much. Torin Thatcher gives us another scene stealing performance as the firm but fair Sir James and if it's possible, betters his performance as Humble Bellows in The Crimson Pirate. This film has everything, action, romance, subtle comedy, and an excellent music score. This is not one to miss and I can't wait to get this movie on DVD so i can give my old VHS copy a well deserved retirement.

The Dantès redemption

How many versions of the famous novel are there in the world?Even the "best movie of all time "(sic) ,according to the IMDb users ,"Shawshank redemption", owes a lot to Alexandre Dumas and his count: Andy is Dantès and Red is Faria.

Robert Vernay loved this novel so much he filmed two versions of it;the first one,reportedly the best (I have not seen it yet)was made in 1942 and featured two parts .So does this one :to see the whole ,the audience was requested to come back to the theater and pay again.One thing for sure,Jean Marais 's aristocratic look and his harsh face make him the perfect actor for this Nemesis role .The fifties version was in color , then something rare in the French cinema ,and was made with care and respect for the public.From start to finish ,Robert Vernay holds his audience spellbound because he knew to tell a story,a thing the N.W. used to ignore,with a few exceptions of course.

Part 1: Betrayal Once again,Dumas combined history with fiction with talent.It begins in 1815,when king Louis the Eighteenth was on the throne and Napoleon was about to come back (Les Cents Jours).More than an innocent's plight,it's the opportunism of the magistrates ,waiting to see where the wind blows which is masterfully shown.On the king 's desk,there's a music box with a bird singing an old nursery rhyme which goes like this:

"J'Ai Un Beau Château Ma Tantirelire ..................... Nous Le Détruirons Ma Tantirelirelo" (I 've got a beautiful château .............................. We shall raze it to the ground..)

When Napoleon arrives ,for a short while ,just before Waterloo,the first thing he does in the king's office is to play the little tune.

The sinister Château D'If and its dark spooky dungeons ,the meeting with L'Abbé Faria ,and the escape are depicted brilliantly.

Part 2: Revenge (is a dish best eaten cold)

Generally ,in these movies in two parts (the French used to say "Epoques"= eras ),there was a summary (for people who could not have seen the first part);sometimes lines on the screen, more often a voice-over.Here Robert Vernay found a more interesting way: the hero tells his story to his henchman .The plot becomes very melodramatic with plenty of new characters and the story is not always as clear as in "betrayal" .There's even a touch of "Oliver Twist",written seven years before "Monte Cristo" .Marais is as impressive as the statue of the Commendatore and he 's got his duel in the end ,finally!

All in all,if you like a good story,told with gusto and panache,this version of the famous novel was made for you

Excellent noir B film about strong-willed girl's struggle with crime

Cleo Moore plays a remarkably strong-willed young woman who is an orphan kept as a work-slave in a waterfront café by the man who stole all her father's money. She is too glamorous for her own good, and no one stops ogling her for a minute, despite the fact that she has no time for that kind of thing. One night she accidentally sees the horrid old man receiving a large sum of cash in his office from a crook, to whom he has passed some stolen goods. She waits until he is asleep and creeps in and steals the money and takes it outside and buries it in a secret place where no one could possibly find it. She then confesses to the police the next morning that she is the thief, and is sent to prison, where she learns gardening and is told by the old gardener of the power which plant roots have to shift things underground and break through walls (this is important later in the story). She is let out after three years for her excellent behaviour and then makes her way back to the café, but it has been demolished and the old man has absconded to South America, so she cannot take revenge. She gets a job in another café owned by a compulsive gambler, to wait things out until she can be certain the various local crooks aren't following her when she goes to dig up the loot. He loses all his money and she wants to help him out with her stolen money. She also falls for a handsome young fisherman. Things get complicated and then more complicated. She sends someone out to dig up the dough but it isn't where she buried it. Then he suddenly comes into money and she thinks he has tricked her, so she goes to see him to protest and he ends up slightly dead, or is he? The film is very good viewing, and Cleo Moore is something all right.

Meh.....

I watched this film for one reason--Richard Basehart. He made some dandy B-movies in the 1950s, and so when I saw this on Netflix, I decided to give it a watch. Unfortunately, the film just wasn't very interesting.

Basehart plays a stubborn Uranium prospector who insists he knows where he can find ore. But, since he hasn't got the money, he is forced to work for others. Eventually, however, he's able to get a rich guy to stake him the money and the rich guy's daughter (Phyllis Kirk) goes along with Basehart for the journey. Now Kirk's character HATES Basehart's, so you know by the end of the film they'll be in love (this is film cliché #5). In the meantime, they take on another partner and head into the desert.

Up until this point, I was totally bored by the film. The chemistry between the man and woman just seemed phony and nothing of any great interest occurs...nothing. However, the film does pick up a bit when they make a bit strike, as some scum-bags are more than willing to kill them and steal their claim. Overall, not a bad film but one that barely ever interested me. Had the relationship between Kirk and Basehart now been one giant cliché after another, it would have been a lot better.

one of the best Audie Murphy westerns

Murphy is the guy looking for revenge,people tend to underestimate him, until he shows himself fast in the draw. One of the best things here is the relationship between Murphy and Dan Duryea. This film is very unpretentious and entertaining, and it´s a pity they don´t make westerns like this anymore.

Review :

Good, but not great

While not in the class of "Run Silent, Run Deep", "The Enemy Below", "U-571", "Das Boot", "Up Periscope" or "Crash Dive" this is still a very watchable sub film. There are no really gripping battle sequences, though the ones that do occur are well done and at least 35% of the film is devoted to the training of submariners which, while interesting, does make the story slow down. Where many war movies concentrate on battle, here there is more character development, romantic entanglements and inter-character friction and interaction than combat. I enjoyed the movie but I felt it was somewhat plodding in spots and I had trouble really caring about the characters. The actors all did very well with what they had, but there is no major conflict to tie it all together. Perhaps because it revolves around the Korean War era it does not have the urgency found in most of the WW2 movies. A good movie but, in my opinion, not a great one.

The Field Marshal of English Letters

Murder Will Out opens with, what else, a murder. Specifically of a woman who had an involvement with three men, struggling author Edward Underdown, publisher Henry Kendall, and successful author James Robertson Justice self described as the Field Marshal of English Letters. Robertson Justice is married quite unhappily to Valerie Hobson who shows quite a bit of her most famous screen character Estella from Great Expectations.

Hobson takes her character from Dickens, but Robertson Justice is a British version of Waldo Lydecker from Laura. Mix these two together and you've got the recipe of an English murder mystery with some real bite and a few clever plot twists in the end.

All three of the men and possibly Hobson have some good reason to murder the victim. None of the men have a satisfactory alibi for the time of the murder so Scotland Yard in the persons of Inspector Garry Marsh and Sergeant Sam Kydd have only to wait it out, watch and observe, and see if this resolves itself.

Like some of our B films you occasionally find a real nugget among them and Murder Will Out, a quota quickie over in the UK, definitely fills that bill.

You will particularly love what James Robertson Justice and Valerie Hobson do with their characters. If you're a fan of English murder mysteries this one is a hidden gem.

This is one of the classic funny and crazy films in Mexico. With a cast full of starts of the time it was one of the smash hits of the mid 50's and one of the most remembered films of Miroslava. Just a proof that some old mexican films -not developed in a ranch or in the country- are really good.

Belle Starr according to Hollywood.



Jane Russell plays a (very) fictionalized Belle Starr. (Going off contemporary photographs the real Belle Starr looked closer to Ernest Borgnine), also Jane gets away with being disguised as a man during a holdup!! You can see we are not talking reality here.

Originally filmed in color, most prints now available are black and white. Jane does a couple of not bad (and rather racy) musical numbers that are a little out of place and appeared to have filmed at a different time. It seems as though cuts may have been as the plot gets a little muddled sometimes and now and again we get the impression we are entering scenes in progress.

After completion this movie was held up for a few years before distribution, which is usually a bad sign. In this case though it seems no worse than many of the second string westerns produced in the forties.

Okay with popcorn and if you're in the right mood.

Bill returns to the Fargo country to take his brother's place and is welcomed by law-abiding cattleman MacKenzie (Jack Ingram)) and his daughter Kathy (Phyllis Coates). The leader of the ruthless cattle interests are townsman Austin (Arthur Space) and his henchmen Red (Myron Healey), Link (Robert J. Wilke) and Albord (Terry Frost). Bill has the idea of putting up barbed wire to keep the herds from been driven over the land cultivated by the farmers. He, aided by Tad Sloan (Fuzzy Knight), produces the wire by make-shift methods, but it proves effective. The cattleman charge in court that the wire is dangerous to their herds but lose the case. Austin orders his men to seize Bill, bale him in strands of the wire, and throw him on the stage of the town hall during a fall festival. Bill doesn't take kindly to this and it precipitates open war.

Wild Bill cuts loose ........

William "Wild Bill" Elliott was one of the better western stars of the 1940's and 1950's. His no-nonsense, peaceable man demeanor served him well in this and dozens of other films. Whether it was fistfights, gunfights or shootouts, he was always on top of his game.

This film was exciting, fast-paced and entertaining. Elliott was fine in this role and was supported by a fine cast. The production values and budget on this film seem a notch above other similar films of the era.

All in all, this was one of Elliot's best films. this is good, quality entertainment........ the kind that is sorely lacking nowadays !
